What is Spindle Cell Sarcoma of the Bone?

Thriving — not just surviving — begins with knowing vital information about your illness and the combination of conventional and holistic cancer treatments available to you.

Spindle cell sarcoma is a rare cancerous soft tissue tumor that develops in the connective tissue, which includes the bone, cartilage, fat, and muscle. Spindle cell sarcoma of the bone commonly arises in the arms, legs, or pelvis of patients over the age of 40. The cells of this malignant (cancerous) disease are called "spindle-cell shape" due to their distinctively long and narrow appearance when examined under a microscope. These idiosyncratic cells allow diagnosticians and radiologists to determine which type of soft tissue sarcoma is present, as there are over 50 different kinds that can develop in many different locations and tissues in the human body.

The three types of spindle cell sarcomas are:

Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is the most prevalent type of soft tissue sarcoma. It originates in fibrous tissue that forms ligaments and tendons. Fibrous tissue also lines the bones and other parts of the body.

Fibrosarcoma

Fibrosarcoma is a rare disease that affects cells known as fibroblasts. Fibroblasts are responsible for generating the fibrous tissue found throughout the human body.

Leiomyosarcoma

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is an uncommon malignancy that develops in smooth muscles lining the stomach, bladder, uterus, and other organs, including the skin. Such muscles are involuntary, which means you cannot control them.

FAQs

1. What are spindle cells?

Spindle cells comprise part of the body’s natural healing process. Normally, once an injured area being repaired has fully healed, spindle cells stop dividing to impede the build-up of these cells. Spindle cell sarcoma occurs when spindle cells begin dividing uncontrollably, which produces a mass of cells that forms a tumor.
