What Is Fibrosarcoma?

Battling a progressive disease begins with being armed with essential information.

Fibrosarcoma is a malignant (cancerous) disease characterized by the presence of immature proliferating fibroblasts. Fibroblasts are cells that create fibrous tissue found throughout the body. Tendons, which connect your muscles to your bones, are made up of fibrous tissue.

There are more than 50 types of soft tissue sarcomas. Fibrosarcoma, also known as fibroblastic sarcoma, represents about 5 percent of primary bone sarcomas. The disease is extremely rare, affecting about 1 in 2 million people.

Fibrosarcoma Symptoms

Signs of fibrosarcoma can take a long time to appear. It can also be difficult to identify since it shares symptoms with several other forms of sarcoma. You might first notice a painless mass or swelling under your skin, usually in the abdomen. As it grows, it can interfere with your ability to use your limb.

Other signs and symptoms of fibrosarcoma may include:

  • Pain and tenderness
  • Coughing and increased breathlessness
  • Dark stool
  • Blood in vomit
  • Irregular bleeding from the vagina

Fibrosarcoma affecting bones can be more complicated to diagnose. Symptoms of primary bone cancer include:

  • Enlargement or swelling around the bone
  • Increased pain in the area of the tumor
  • Difficulty moving a joint or limb
  • Fragile bones, causing them to break easily
  • Numbness of the body

If you have persistent symptoms, schedule a meeting with your doctor.

Fibrosarcoma Causes

Currently, doctors do not know the exact cause of fibrosarcoma. However, certain factors may increase a man or woman’s risk, including:

  • Radiation exposure
  • Chemical exposure to vinyl chloride, arsenic, and dioxin
  • Weakened or damaged lymph system
  • Inherited disorders, including:

Not everyone with risk factors will develop fibrosarcoma. Conversely, the absence of risk factors does not always guarantee immunity from the disease. If you have risk factors, discuss each one with your doctor.

Diagnostic Tests for Fibrosarcoma

Early diagnosis is key to improving your fibrosarcoma prognosis and life expectancy. However, identifying fibrosarcoma is not always a straightforward process. Your doctor may recommend the following procedures to determine which variant of cancer is at work:

  • Physical and medical examination
  • Standard x-rays
  • Computed tomography (CT) scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans
  • Positron emission tomography (PET) scans
  • Ultrasound scans
  • Biopsies or removal of a tissue sample for testing
