What Is Bone Cancer? Understand Your Disease

Bone cancer is a condition that manifests in pain, swelling, and tenderness in any bone in the body. When detected, this sporadic disease either started in the bones (primary cancer) or has spread to the bone after originating in other parts of the body (metastasis or secondary cancer). In most cases, it affects the pelvis, arms, and legs.

Bone Cancers We Treat at New Hope Unlimited

Primary bone cancers are a specific subtype known as sarcomas. There are several types of cancers of the bone, including:

Osteosarcoma

This malignant tumor produces immature bone, usually in the arm or leg. Osteosarcoma is the most common type of bone cancer and generally occurs in people under the age of 25.

Chondrosarcoma

This bone cancer often occurs in the pelvis, legs, or arms of middle-aged adults or older. Chondrosarcoma is the second most common form of bone cancer in which cells produce the gristly connective tissue from which most bones develop (cartilage).

Ewing sarcoma

This tumor is rare and mostly originates in the pelvis, chest wall, legs, or arms. Ewing sarcoma is more prevalent in teenagers and young adults, but can still occur at any age.

New Hope Unlimited also treats lesser-known bone cancers, including fibrosarcoma and malignant fibrous histiocytoma, chordoma, and giant cell tumor of bone.

Bone Cancer Symptoms

Other than pain, inflammation, and tenderness; people with bone cancer may also experience:

  • A lump or mass in the affected area
  • Weakened bone, resulting in a higher risk of fracture
  • Unintended weight loss
  • Fatigue

In most cases, these symptoms are due to conditions other than cancer, such as arthritis or injuries. Still, if these problems persist with no known reason, see your doctor immediately.

Bone Cancer Risk Factors and Prevention

Scientists do not know the exact cause of bone cancer, but researchers have found factors associated with an increased risk, including:

  • A family history of bone cancer
  • A family history of retinoblastoma (an eye cancer)
  • Previous treatment with radiation therapy
  • Prior treatment with chemotherapy
  • History of certain health conditions, including Li-Fraumeni syndrome and Paget's disease
  • Implantation of metal to repair fractures

Since the preventable causes of bone cancer are unknown, preventing the disease is not possible at this time. In most cases, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, receiving routine medical care, and stopping smoking can help ward off many diseases, which may include cancer of the bone.

Detection and Diagnosis

A doctor may begin with a blood test to rule out other possible causes. You will then be referred to a bone specialist where the following diagnostic tests may be ordered:

  • Bone scan
  • X-rays
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
  • Computed tomography (CT or CAT) scan
  • Positron emission tomography (PET)
  • Bone biopsy
