What is Leiomyosarcoma?

Beating a life-threatening disease starts with being armed with essential information.

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a soft tissue sarcoma, a cancer that occurs in muscle, fat, blood vessels, or any other tissues that surround, support, and protect the organs of the body. LMS specifically affects smooth muscle tissue in the body. Although rare, LMS is one of the more common types of sarcoma to develop in adults. According to one estimate from the National Organization of Rare Disorders, leiomyosarcomas account for 7 to 11 percent of all cases of soft tissue sarcomas.

Leiomyosarcoma tumors most often develop in the abdomen and can measure over 4 inches across. However, LMS tumors can occur anywhere in the body, including the skin, arms, legs, and a woman’s uterus (uterine leiomyosarcoma).

Leiomyosarcoma Symptoms in Men and Women

Signs of leiomyosarcoma may include:

  • Abdominal discomfort or bloating
  • A lump in the abdomen or any part of the body
  • Swelling or recurrent pain in any area of the body
  • Bleeding from the vagina in menopausal women
  • Sudden changes in periods for women who are not menopausal

If you notice any of these symptoms, speak with your doctor right away.

Leiomyosarcoma Causes

While the exact causes of leiomyosarcomas are unknown, certain factors increase your risk:

  • Increasing age of 50 and over
  • Exposure to radiation therapy
  • Exposure to some types of chemicals, including:
    • Vinyl chloride
    • Herbicides, such as weed killers and dioxins

If you have risk factors for leiomyosarcoma, discuss them with your doctor.

Diagnostic Tests for Leiomyosarcoma

Early diagnosis is crucial to improving your leiomyosarcoma prognosis and life expectancy. Tests for diagnosing leiomyosarcoma may include:

  • Medical history analysis
  • Physical examination
  • Hysteroscopy
  • Ultrasound scan
  • Computed tomography (CT) scan
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
  • Medical biopsy
