What is a Pineal Tumor?

Unlocking the possibility of cancer remission begins with knowing vital information about your diagnosis.

A pineal tumor — also called pineal region tumor or pinealoma — is a rare tumor that arises in the pineal gland in your brain. The pineal gland sits near the center of your brain and secretes certain hormones, including melatonin, which regulates the sleep-wake cycle.

A pineal region tumor accounts for only 0.5 to 1.6 percent of brain tumors. The tumorous mass can be benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous). They are given a grade between 1 and 4 based on how fast they grow. 1 is the slowest-growing grade and 4 is the most aggressive.

Pineal Region Tumors We Treat at New Hope Unlimited

Our cancer care team provides a combination of conventional and alternative treatments for several types of pinealomas, including:

Pineocytoma

These tumors are slow-growing (grade I or II).

Pineal Parenchymal Tumors

These are intermediate-grade tumors (grade II or III).

Papillary Pineal Tumors

These are intermediate-grade tumors (grade II or III).

Pineoblastoma

Pineoblastoma is a rare, aggressive, and fast-growing tumor (grade IV).

Mixed Pineal Tumors

These tumors are a combination of slow and fast-growing cell types.

Here at New Hope Unlimited, we may reduce or reverse the following symptoms of pineal region tumors:

  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

  • Irritability
  • Memory problems
  • Vision changes
  • Difficulty with eye movements
  • Coordination issues
  • Tremors

What Caused Your Disease?

Similar to most brain tumors, the cause of pineal tumors is currently unknown. Research is underway to determine the possible causes. However, the following may increase your risk of developing pinealomas:

  • Mutations to the RBI gene
  • Exposure to certain chemicals, such as:
    • Benzene
    • Beryllium
    • Vinyl chloride
    • Asbestos
    • Arsenic
  • Exposure to radiation

Detection and Diagnosis of Pineal Region Tumors

The key to improving your pinealoma prognosis and life expectancy is to find the tumor in its early stages. Your doctor might order a number of tests:

  • Neurological exam
  • Visual field exam
  • Imaging tests, including:
    • Computed tomography (CT) scan
    • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
  • Blood tests
  • Lumbar puncture (spinal tap)
  • Sample tissue removal or biopsy
