What is Pineoblastoma in Adults?

The journey toward complete remission begins with knowing essential information about your disease.

The pineal gland is a small organ found deep inside the brain. It secretes a hormone called melatonin, which controls an individual’s natural sleep-wake cycle. Pineoblastomas are rare brain tumors that form in this gland.

Pineoblastoma is more aggressive than other tumors that occur in the pineal gland. Its rapid growth rate can cause cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to build up in the brain — a condition called hydrocephalus. While pineoblastoma may metastasize (spread) through the CSF in 10 to 20 percent of cases, most of the time, a tumor does not spread to other areas of the body.

Pineoblastoma Symptoms in Men and Women

Because this brain tumor obstructs the flow of cerebrospinal fluid, many of its symptoms are related to CSF buildup. Signs of pineoblastoma include:

  • Headaches
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Double vision
  • Eye movement issues, such as difficulty looking up

If you have persistent symptoms, seek immediate medical attention.

Pineoblastoma Causes and Risk Factors

Currently, the exact cause of pineoblastoma is not understood, although genetic abnormalities are suspected risk factors.

Diagnostic Tests for Pineoblastoma

Because early detection is key to improving your pineoblastoma prognosis and life expectancy, a doctor may use these tests and procedures to produce an accurate diagnosis:

  • Medical history and physical exam
  • Computed tomography (CT) scan
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
  • Positron emission tomography (PET) scan
  • Removing a sample of tissue for testing (biopsy)
  • Removing cerebrospinal fluid for testing (lumbar puncture)
