What Is Craniopharyngioma in Adults?

Winning the battle against a life-threatening disease begins with being armed with essential information.

Craniopharyngioma is a rare class of noncancerous (benign) and fatal brain tumor. In this disease, abnormal growth of tissue (tumor) develops near the brain's pituitary gland, which secretes hormones that control several essential body functions. As craniopharyngioma progresses, it can disrupt the function of the pituitary gland and other nearby parts of the brain.

Craniopharyngiomas We Treat at New Hope Unlimited

There are two distinct types of craniopharyngioma:

Adamantinomatous craniopharyngiomas
Histologically, adamantinomatous craniopharyngioma is a complex epithelial lesion with several distinctive morphologic features. This type of brain tumor most often begins in the pituitary stalk and project into the hypothalamus.

Papillary craniopharyngiomas
These tumorous growths are composed of well-differentiated stratified squamous epithelium. They contrast histologically from the adamantinomatous variety as they lack ameloblastic epithelium.

Craniopharyngioma Symptoms in Adults

As a brain tumor enlarges, it can increase pressure on the pituitary gland and the optic nerve, which sends signals from the eyes to the brain. The pressure can cause the following symptoms:

  • Vision changes, including vision loss and blurred sight
  • Disorientation or trouble walking
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Sleepiness (lethargy)
  • Mood swings and other behavior changes
  • Constant or excessive thirst
  • Increased urge to urinate
  • A difficulty with learning and concentration
  • Headaches that may be worse in the morning
  • Unintended weight gain

If you have persistent signs of craniopharyngioma, make it a priority to see your doctor.

Craniopharyngioma Causes

The exact causes of craniopharyngioma are not understood. However, certain factors may increase a man or woman’s risk, including:

  • Exposure to ionizing radiation
  • Genetic conditions, including:
  • A family history of brain tumors

There are cases when someone without risk factors develops brain tumors, and someone who has risk factors may never have craniopharyngioma. If you have risk factors, discuss them with your doctor.

Craniopharyngioma Diagnosis

Early diagnosis is key to improving your craniopharyngioma prognosis and life expectancy. Your physician may recommend the following tests to detect a brain tumor:

  • Medical history and physical exam
  • Blood tests
  • Neurologic exam
  • Comprehensive eye exam
  • X-rays
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
  • Computerized tomography (CT) scan
