What Is Von Hippel Lindau Disease?

Combating a progressive disease begins with being armed with essential information.

Von Hippel-Lindau syndrome (VHL) is an inherited condition associated with tumor and cyst development in multiple organs. Patients with VHL may have one or more of different diseases, including:

  • Pheochromocytoma. A rare tumor of the adrenal gland.
  • Hemangioblastomas. Blood vessel tumors of the brain, spinal cord, and eye.
  • Clear cell renal cell carcinoma. A specific type of kidney cancer.
  • Retinal angiomas. Eye tumors with important systemic and visual implication.
  • Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor. Cysts or serous cystadenomas in the pancreas.

Other features of VHL include kidney and pancreatic cysts, tumors near a man’s testicles (epididymal cystadenomas), and tumors of the ear (endolymphatic sac tumors) that may cause hearing loss.

Types of Von Hippel Lindau Diseases

New Hope Unlimited has a high degree of expertise in the complexities of VHL. Our team treats the two types of Von Hippel-Lindau Disease, which are VHL Type 1 and Type 2. The primary difference is that people with Type 1 disease rarely develop pheochromocytomas.

Von Hippel Lindau Disease Symptoms in Men and Women

Sometimes, VHL has vague or no symptoms. When it does have signs, they vary and depend on the complications caused by the disease. The signs of Von Hippel-Lindau disease may include:

  • Fluctuating or constant high blood pressure
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeats
  • Recurrent headaches
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness when standing
  • Problems with balance and walking
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Weakness and fatigue
  • Vision problems
  • Feelings of anxiety, panic, and fear
  • Decreased sensation in the arms, legs, and body
  • Difficulties with bowel and bladder function
  • Weight loss

Schedule a meeting with your physician if you have one or more persistent symptoms.

Von Hippel Lindau Disease Causes

Similar to many progressive diseases, the exact cause of Von Hippel-Lindau disease is uncertain. The only known risk factor is that VHL is a genetic condition running in families. If you have a blood relative with a history of the disease, New Hope recommends seeing a medical professional in genetic counseling.

Tests for Von Hippel Lindau Disease

Doctors diagnose von Hippel-Lindau disease based on specific clinical criteria (signs and symptoms), or when molecular genetic testing reveals a change (mutation) in the VHL gene.

Tests that help establish an accurate clinical diagnosis include:

  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the brain and spinal cord
  • Fundoscopy or dilated eye exam
  • Ultrasound examination or MRI of the abdominal area
  • Blood and urinary catecholamine metabolites

A correct diagnosis, followed by proper treatment, is key to improving your VHL prognosis.
