What is Small Cell Lung Cancer?

Unlocking the possibility of lung cancer remission starts with knowing vital information about the disease.

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) accounts for 10 to 15 percent of all lung cancer cases, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). One of the more aggressive forms of lung malignancies, the cancer cells in SCLC tend to grow and spread quickly. As a result, the disease is often found after spreading throughout the body. Early detection, however, raises the likelihood of remission.

Medical researchers and scientists also refer to SCLC as oat cell cancer, oat cell carcinoma, small cell lung carcinoma, and small cell undifferentiated carcinoma.

Small Cell Lung Cancers We Treat at New Hope Unlimited

The two main types of oat cell lung cancer are:

Small cell carcinoma

Small cell carcinoma is a highly malignant disease that commonly arises within the lung. However, it can sometimes occur in other areas of the body, such as the cervix, prostate, and gastrointestinal tract.

Combined small cell carcinoma

Combined small cell lung carcinoma (c-SCLC) is a form of multiphasic lung cancer. This malignant tumor contains a component of small cell lung carcinoma with one (or more) components of non-small cell lung carcinoma.

Oat Cell Cancer Symptoms in Men and Women

The following are signs of small cell lung carcinoma:

  • New onset of wheezing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pains
  • Unrelenting cough that may worsen
  • Coughing up blood or rust-colored sputum (phlegm)
  • Voice hoarseness
  • Weight loss and loss of appetite
  • Weakness and fatigue
  • Recurrent infection with bronchitis or pneumonia

If SCLC spreads to other body sites, it may cause:

  • Bone pain
  • Headache, dizziness, seizures, or balance problems
  • Arm or leg numbness or weakness
  • Jaundice (yellowing) of skin and eyes
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck or shoulder

If you have persistent symptoms, seek immediate medical attention.

Small Cell Lung Cancer Risk Factors

Cigar smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke are the main risk factors for small cell lung cancer. In fact, the ACS notes that it is rare for someone who has never smoked to have SCLC.

Other risk factors for lung cancer include:

  • Exposure to cancer-causing carcinogens, such as:
    • Radon
    • Asbestos
    • Radioactive ores like uranium
    • Diesel exhaust
    • Arsenic in drinking water
    • Inhaled chemicals, such as arsenic, beryllium, cadmium, nickel compounds, chromium compounds, silica, vinyl chloride, coal products, mustard gas, and chloromethyl ethers.
  • Radiation therapy to the lungs
  • Personal or family history of lung cancer
  • Certain dietary supplements

If you have risk factors, discuss prevention with your doctor.

Diagnostic Tests for Small Cell Lung Cancer

Early diagnosis is key to improving your small cell lung cancer prognosis and life expectancy. Your doctor may order the following procedures to find a tumor in the lung:

  • Medical history and physical exam
  • Imaging tests, such as:
    • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
    • Computerized tomography (CT) scan
    • Positron emission tomography (PET) scan
    • Chest x-rays
  • Bronchoscopy
  • Endoscopic bronchial ultrasound (EBUS)
  • Mediastinoscopy
  • Sputum cytology
  • Thoracoscopy
  • Video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS)
