What Is Salivary Gland Cancer?

Cancer cells can arise anywhere in your body — even in parts you never consider or think about. Take the salivary glands, for example. They produce a liquid substance called saliva or spit, which provides lubrication for chewing and swallowing, and overall keeps the mouth and throat moist. Where Exactly Does This Cancer Develop?
Major and minor are the two main types of salivary glands. Most salivary gland cancers start in the major glands found on each side of the face.
The major salivary gland has three sets:
- Parotid glands. These are the largest salivary glands in your mouth. About 70 percent of salivary gland tumors occur here. In most cases, they are benign (noncancerous).
- Submandibular glands. These glands are found below the jaw. About 15 percent of salivary gland tumors develop here, and nearly all of them are malignant (cancerous).
- Sublingual glands. These glands are under the tongue. While tumor occurrence in this area is rare, it is possible.
As for cancers of the minor salivary glands, they often begin in the roof of the mouth.
