What is Merkel Cell Carcinoma?

Battling a progressive disease starts with being armed with essential information.

Merkel Cell Carcinoma (MCC), also called neuroendocrine carcinoma of the skin, is a rare and aggressive form of skin cancer. It has a high risk of recurring (coming back) and metastasizing (spreading) throughout the body, with most recurrences occurring within 2 years after diagnosis of the primary tumor. The disease is 40 times rarer than melanoma, yet it kills about 1 in 3 patients compared with 1 in 9 for melanoma skin cancer.

What are the Symptoms of Merkel Cell Carcinoma?

The first sign of Merkel cell carcinoma is often a fast-growing, painless nodule (tumor) on the skin. The nodule may resemble the color of your skin, or appear in varying shades of pink, red, blue, or purple. MCC tumors can develop anywhere on the body, although the most common sites are the face, head or neck.

What are the Causes of Merkel Cell Carcinoma?

Though the causes are not completely understood, medical scientists determined the following as risk factors for Merkel cell carcinoma:

  • Excessive exposure to natural or artificial sunlight
  • A weakened immune system due to:
    • Infection with human immunodeficiency viruses
    • Taking drugs that suppress the immune response
    • Having chronic leukemia
  • A personal or family history of skin cancers
  • Increasing age, usually starting at 50
  • Being naturally fair or having light-colored skin

If you have risk factors, discuss prevention with your doctor.

How to Diagnose Merkel Cell Carcinoma

Early detection is key to improving your Merkel cell carcinoma prognosis and life expectancy. Diagnostic tests for MCC may include but are not restricted to:

  • Medical history and physical exam
  • Skin biopsy (sample tissue removal)
  • Computed tomography (CT) scan
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
  • Positron emission tomography (PET) scan
