What Patients Say About Cancer Treatment at New Hope

What Is Skin Cancer?

Fighting cancer begins with being armed with essential information about the disease.

Carcinoma of the skin is the most common form of cancer in the United States. It develops when the body does not repair damage to the DNA inside skin cells, allowing the cells to divide and grow uncontrollably. Different factors cause skin cell damage, including genetics and skin type. But most cases of skin cancer are the effect of overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) light emitted by the sun. Skin cancer may appear as a mole, lesion, dark spot, a wound that does not heal, or a lump on the skin.

Skin Cancers We Treat at New Hope Unlimited

There are three main types of skin cancer:

Basal Cell Carcinoma

More than 90 percent of all skin cancers are basal cell carcinoma. They are slow-growing and seldom metastasize (spread) to other body parts. If left untreated, however, it can spread and invade other tissues under the skin.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma or Nonmelanoma

This skin cancer can grow more destructive than basal cell carcinoma. It often develops deep beneath the skin and can spread to distant parts of the body.

Melanoma

This aggressive cancer begins in the cells that create skin pigment. Melanoma is less common than squamous or basal cell skin cancers, but it is more life-threatening. Early diagnosis and apt treatment are crucial to improving a melanoma skin cancer prognosis.

New Hope also provides alternative treatment options for rare types of skin cancer, including Merkel cell carcinoma and Kaposi's sarcoma, among other conditions.

Skin Cancer Symptoms in Men and Women

Not all skin cancers are alike and they may not cause many symptoms. Still, significant and unusual changes to your skin can be a warning sign for the different types of carcinoma.

According to Healthline, some signs of skin cancer include:

  • Skin lesions: Any new growth, including moles, bumps, sores, scaly patches, or dark spots, that does not heal or go away.
  • Asymmetry: The two divisions of the skin growth are not even or identical.
  • Border: The skin growth has broken, uneven edges.
  • Color: The growth has an unnatural color, such as white, black, pink, or blue.
  • Diameter: The mole or spot is bigger than one-quarter inch.
  • Evolving: The growth is changing in size, color, and/or shape.

Schedule an immediate consultation with your doctor and dermatologist if you find a suspicious skin growth with the above characteristics.

Skin Cancer Causes

Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun or tanning beds is the primary cause of basal cell skin cancer. As mentioned, UV rays can damage the DNA inside the skin cells, causing aberrant cell growth. Excessive UV exposure also increases a person's risk of developing squamous cell skin cancer.

Squamous cell skin carcinoma can also occur after long-term exposure to cancer-causing chemicals (carcinogens), such as asbestos and benzene. It can emerge within a burn scar or ulcer, and may be induced by some types of human papillomavirus (HPV).

The cause of melanoma remains unclear. Most moles do not turn into melanomas, and medical researchers are not certain why some do. Similar to basal and squamous cell skin cancers, UV rays can cause melanoma skin cancer. However, it is important to note that melanomas can develop in parts of the body that never receive sun exposure.

Skin Cancer Diagnosis

A biopsy of the mole, dark spot, or any unusual growth is the only way to ascertain if someone has skin cancer. A surgeon will remove a portion of the tissue from the suspicious area, in which he or she will sample and test under a microscope. A biopsy also plays a role in determining the best treatment plan for skin cancer patients.
