What is Hyalinizing Clear Cell Carcinoma?

Thriving — not just surviving — begins with knowing vital information about your disease and the holistic cancer treatments available to you.

Hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma (HCCC) is a rare minor salivary gland tumor made up of “clear” cytoplasms arranged in cords, nests, or clusters in a hyalinized stroma. The most common sites for HCCC are the palate and tongue base, followed by the other minor salivary gland locations. These include the buccal mucosa, retromolar trigone, lips, floor of the mouth, and gingiva. HCCC can sometimes invade bones, and distinguishing the difference between a mucosal and primary bone tumor can be challenging. In hindsight, the overall outcome for hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma is excellent.

What are the Signs of HCCC?

Here at New Hope Unlimited, our unique combination of conventional and alternative cancer treatments aim to reverse the main symptom of hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma and its effects on the body. HCCC presents itself as a painless mass (tumor) in the oral cavity with an occasional metastatic (cancerous) spread. The tumor size can range between 1.0 to 4.5 centimeters and have a white-tan surface.

What Caused Your Cancer?

What causes the mutation that leads to HCCC remains unanswered. Furthermore, unlike other salivary gland cancers and oral malignancies, smoking cigarettes and exposure to radiation therapy are not suspected to stimulate the development of HCCC. In fact, the only known risk factor for hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma is advancing age or being at least 60 years old.

How Do Doctors Diagnose HCCC?

Diagnosing hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma begins with an oncologist or dentist examining your oral cavity. While assessing the mouth, he or she may ask:

  • When did you first notice the unusual growth in your mouth?
  • Did the mass ever change in appearance?
  • Have you encountered any bleeding or pain from the mass?

In the suspicion of a malignant salivary gland tumor, undergoing a biopsy is often necessary to produce an accurate diagnosis. If hyalinizing clear cell carcinoma is present, the next step is to plan your cancer treatment.
