What Is Gallbladder Cancer?

Battling a progressive disease begins with being armed with essential information.

Gallbladder cancer, occurs when healthy gallbladder cells develop changes (mutations) in their DNA. These mutations cause cells to grow uncontrollably and to continue living when other cells would normally die. The accumulating cells form a mass (tumor) that can grow beyond the gallbladder and spread (metastasize) to other areas of the body. Metastasis of primary gallbladder cancer significantly impacts survival and quality of life.

Gallbladder Cancers We Treat at New Hope Unlimited

There are several types of gallbladder cancer, including:

Adenocarcinoma
Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of gallbladder cancer. It begins in gland-like cells that line the gallbladder.

Squamous cell carcinoma
This rare cancer of the gallbladder develops from the skin-like cells that form the lining of the gallbladder.

Adenosquamous carcinoma
These cancers have both glandular cancer cells and squamous cancer cells.

Small cell cancer
Consists of aggressive tumors most common in elderly females, particularly those with cholecystolithiasis.

New Hope Unlimited offers a unique combination of conventional and alternative cancer treatments to all gallbladder malignancies, including other less common gallbladder cancers like lymphoma, melanoma, sarcoma, and neuroendocrine tumors.

Gallbladder Cancer Symptoms

Gallbladder cancer is rare. It is often misdiagnosed and is difficult to detect early due to vague, nonspecific, and sometimes absent signs or symptoms.

Advanced gallbladder cancer may reveal itself through:

  • An abdominal mass in the right upper abdomen
  • Abdominal pain and a feeling of fullness
  • Unexplained or unintentional weight loss
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Weakened immune system, causing recurrent fevers
  • Jaundice or yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes

If you have persistent symptoms, see your doctor immediately.

Gallbladder Cancer Causes

Currently, medical researchers do not know the exact cause of gallbladder cancer. However, certain factors may increase a man or woman’s risk, including:

  • A history of gallstones
  • Infection with other gallbladder disorders, such as:
    • Gallbladder polyps
    • Chronic gallbladder infection
    • Primary sclerosing cholangitis
  • Increasing age
  • Tobacco smoking
  • Personal or family history of gallbladder cancer
  • Unhealthy weight or obesity

Not everyone without risk factors is immune to gallbladder cancer. Conversely, men and women who have risk factors will not always develop the disease. If you have risk factors, it is important to discuss them with your doctor.

Diagnostic Tests for Gallbladder Cancer

Early diagnosis is key to improving your gallbladder cancer prognosis and life expectancy. Your doctor may recommend the following procedures to detect cancer of the gallbladder:

  • Medical history and physical exam
  • Blood tests
  • Imaging scans, including:
    • Ultrasound
    • Computerized tomography (CT)
    • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
    • Positron emission tomography (PET)
  • Biopsy
  • Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography
  • Percutaneous cholangiography
  • Laparoscopy
  • Endoscopic ultrasonography
