What Patients Say About Cancer Treatment at New Hope

Alternative Cancer Treatment Testimonial from Cindy

What Is Chondrosarcoma?

Battling a progressive disease begins with being armed with essential information.

The defining characteristic of chondrosarcoma, a type of bone cancer, is that its cells produce cartilage. Most often, the disease begins in the bones of the pelvis, hip or shoulder, and can sometimes arise in the soft tissue near bones. In some cases, chondrosarcoma stems from a preexisting non-cancerous bone or cartilage tumor.

Chondrosarcomas We Treat at New Hope Unlimited

There are several types of chondrosarcoma, including:

Central chondrosarcoma: most common subtype of chondrosarcoma

Myxoid chondrosarcoma: a slow-growing tumor involving the deep soft tissues of the proximal limbs.

Clear cell chondrosarcoma: occurs in the proximal part of the femur or humerus.

New Hope also offers alternative treatments to extremely rare and aggressive forms of chondrosarcoma, such as mesenchymal chondrosarcoma and dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma.

Chondrosarcoma Symptoms

The following are the most common signs of chondrosarcoma:

  • A large mass on the affected bone
  • A feeling of pressure around the mass
  • Local swelling or palpable mass
  • Increasing pain
  • Fracture due to weakened bone

Schedule a meeting with your doctor or an orthopedic oncologist if you experience persistent symptoms. Early and accurate diagnosis, accompanied by proper treatment, can improve your chondrosarcoma prognosis and life expectancy.

Chondrosarcoma Causes

The exact cause of chondrosarcoma is unknown. However, the following health conditions may be present when chondrosarcoma occurs:

  • Enchondromas:a non-cancerous bone tumor that develops from cartilage, usually affecting the hands and other areas
  • Maffucci syndrome:a combination of multiple enchondromas and angiomas
  • Multiple exostoses (osteochondromas):an abundance of cartilage and bone growth near the end of the physis (growing tissue toward the end of the long bones)
  • Ollier disease:a group of enchondromas

Diagnostic Tests for Chondrosarcoma

In addition to a complete medical history and physical exam to rule out other possible causes of your symptoms, diagnostic procedures for chondrosarcoma may include:

  • Biopsy
  • X-ray
  • Computed tomography (CT or CAT) scan
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
  • Positron emission tomography (PET) scan
