What Is Cancer of Unknown Primary? Understand Your Disease
Carcinoma of unknown primary (CUP) is a rare disorder in which cancer cells are found, but it is unclear where in the body they started. This new cancer growth classifies as secondary cancer. Medical experts may also refer to this disease as metastatic malignancy of unknown primary, metastasis of unknown origin (MUO), or occult primary cancer.

Adenocarcinoma

When these cells are examined under a microscope, sufficient detail shows their cancerous properties. However, the cells are often too irregular to distinguish them further. These cancers make up about 30% of CUP cases.
Poorly differentiated malignant neoplasm
These are distinctly cancers, but the cells are so unnatural that doctors have difficulties identifying what type of cell they may have originated from.
Squamous cell cancer
These cancers resemble the flat cells on the surface of the skin or the linings of some organs.
Neuroendocrine carcinoma
These sporadic cancers begin from cells of the diffuse neuroendocrine system. They account for 3% of CUP cases.

- Excessive sun exposure
- Poor nutrition
- Lack of exercise
- Obesity
- Exposure to radiation
- Exposure to chemicals and toxins in some manufacturing industries

Diagnosis of Cancer of Unknown Primary
Testing for CUP requires your doctor to check your medical background and conduct a physical exam. Then, he or she will refer you to a specialist, in which the following tests may be ordered:

- Imaging tests (CT, PET-CT, MRI, ultrasound, bone scans, and x-rays)
