What Is Cancer of Unknown Primary? Understand Your Disease

Carcinoma of unknown primary (CUP) is a rare disorder in which cancer cells are found, but it is unclear where in the body they started. This new cancer growth classifies as secondary cancer. Medical experts may also refer to this disease as metastatic malignancy of unknown primary, metastasis of unknown origin (MUO), or occult primary cancer.

CUPs We Treat at New Hope Unlimited

Cancers of unknown primary are divided into five principal groups:

Adenocarcinoma

Adenocarcinoma begins in the gland cells. These cells line certain organs and secrete substances such as mucus or digestive juices. At least 60 % of CUP cases are adenocarcinomas.

Poorly differentiated carcinoma

When these cells are examined under a microscope, sufficient detail shows their cancerous properties. However, the cells are often too irregular to distinguish them further. These cancers make up about 30% of CUP cases.

Poorly differentiated malignant neoplasm

These are distinctly cancers, but the cells are so unnatural that doctors have difficulties identifying what type of cell they may have originated from.

Squamous cell cancer

These cancers resemble the flat cells on the surface of the skin or the linings of some organs.

Neuroendocrine carcinoma

These sporadic cancers begin from cells of the diffuse neuroendocrine system. They account for 3% of CUP cases.

Cancer of Unknown Primary Symptoms

People with CUP may experience:

  • Consistent pain in a specific area of the body
  • Persistent coughs or hoarseness
  • Recurring fevers or night sweats
  • A lump or mass in any part of the body
  • Unusual bleeding or discharge
  • Changes in bowel or bladder habits
  • Loss of appetite
  • Unexplained weight loss

If you are worried about any changes in your body, please consult your doctor immediately.

Risk Factors and Prevention

Because CUP can be any type of primary cancer, the risk factors for all cancers are the same risk factors for carcinoma of unknown primary.

The following may increase your chance of developing CUP:

  • Older age. The average diagnosis for CUP begins at 60
  • A family history of cancer
  • Cigarette smoking and tobacco chewing
  • Excessive sun exposure
  • Poor nutrition
  • Lack of exercise
  • Obesity
  • Exposure to radiation
  • Exposure to chemicals and toxins in some manufacturing industries

Since the causes of CUP are unknown, it is not possible to prevent it at this time. However, making healthy lifestyle choices can help reduce your risk of many diseases, which may include CUP.

Diagnosis of Cancer of Unknown Primary

Testing for CUP requires your doctor to check your medical background and conduct a physical exam. Then, he or she will refer you to a specialist, in which the following tests may be ordered:

  • Blood and urine tests
  • Biopsy
  • Endoscopy
  • Imaging tests (CT, PET-CT, MRI, ultrasound, bone scans, and x-rays)

FAQs

1. Why is the primary cancer never found in some cases?

Small sizes and slow growth rates make some primary cancers challenging to find. The body’s immune system may have also killed the primary tumor before the secondary cancer was found.
