What Patients Say About Cancer Treatment at New Hope
What is Uterine Sarcoma?
Knowing vital information about your disease is the first step toward cancer remission.
Uterine sarcoma is a rare form of uterine cancer. It begins in the muscle and supporting tissues of the uterus (womb), which is a hollow organ about the size and shape of a medium-sized pear. Sarcomas are cancers that arise from tissues such as muscle, fat, bone, and fibrous tissue.
Without immediate and proper treatment, uterine sarcoma can progress through these stages:
- Stage I: The sarcoma is confined within the uterus.
- Stage II: The sarcoma has metastasized (spread) to the cervix.
- Stage III: The sarcoma has metastasized beyond the uterus and cervix, but it is still contained within the pelvis.
- Stage IV: The sarcoma has reached areas outside the pelvis, including the abdomen, bladder, and groin.
Uterine Sarcomas We Treat at New Hope Unlimited
Our cancer care team specializes in a combination of conventional and alternative treatments for several types of uterine sarcomas, including:
Uterine Leiomyosarcoma (LMS)
LMS is the most common type of uterine sarcoma, developing in the muscular wall of the uterus (the myometrium). In most cases, these tumors grow and spread quickly.
Endometrial Stromal Sarcoma (ESS)
ESS tumors begin in the supporting connective tissue (stroma) of the lining of the uterus (endometrium). Endometrial stromal sarcomas are rare.
These fast-growing, aggressive cancers may occur in the myometrium or endometrium.
Addressing the Signs of Uterine Sarcoma
As a leading provider of comprehensive care and new hope, among our core missions is to reverse the following symptoms of uterine sarcoma:
- Abnormal bleeding from the vagina
- Unusual vaginal discharge
- A lump in the vagina
- Frequent urination
- A constant feeling of fullness
- Pain in the abdomen or pelvis
- Changes in bladder or bowel habits
We are also committed to addressing the general symptoms associated with cancer, including:
- Fatigue and weakness
- Loss of appetite, leading to weight loss
- Frequent fevers or infections
- An overall feeling of ill health (malaise)
It is important to note, however, that symptoms of uterine sarcoma may vary from case to case depending on the location, size, and progression of a tumor.
What Caused Your Cancer?
Currently, what causes uterine sarcoma is unclear. However, the following factors may increase a woman’s risk of developing the disease:
- Previous treatments with pelvic radiation therapy
- Being an African-American woman
- Being born with an abnormal copy of the RB gene or retinoblastoma protein
Tests for Uterine Sarcoma
Getting an early diagnosis is your best chance at improving your uterine sarcoma prognosis. To produce accurate findings and determine the stage of your disease, your doctor might order the following tests:
- Medical and physical exam
- Pap test
- Endometrial biopsy
- Dilation and curettage
- Cystoscopy and proctoscopy
- Imaging tests, such as:
- Transvaginal ultrasound
- Computerized tomography (CT) scan
- Positron emission tomography (PET) scan
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
- Chest x-ray
After receiving a uterine sarcoma diagnosis, the most important step is to plan your treatment.
