Uterine sarcoma is a rare form of uterine cancer. It begins in the muscle and supporting tissues of the uterus (womb), which is a hollow organ about the size and shape of a medium-sized pear. Sarcomas are cancers that arise from tissues such as muscle, fat, bone, and fibrous tissue.
Without immediate and proper treatment, uterine sarcoma can progress through these stages:
- Stage I: The sarcoma is confined within the uterus.
- Stage II: The sarcoma has metastasized (spread) to the cervix.
- Stage III: The sarcoma has metastasized beyond the uterus and cervix, but it is still contained within the pelvis.
- Stage IV: The sarcoma has reached areas outside the pelvis, including the abdomen, bladder, and groin.
