What Is Urethral Cancer?

Battling a progressive disease begins with being armed with essential information.

Urine, the body's primary means of eliminating excess water and waste substances, moves from the bladder through a tube called the urethra. In men, the urethra goes through the prostate and the penis. In women, the tube is shorter and ends just above the vaginal opening. If you have urethral cancer, cells in the area mutate and grow uncontrollably. Urethral cancer is rare, occurring more often in men than in women.

Urethral Cancers We Treat at New Hope Unlimited

There are three types of urethral cancer, including:

Squamous cell carcinoma
In women, urethral squamous cell carcinoma begins in the part of the tube near the bladder. In men, it develops in the cells lining the urethra in the penis.

Transitional cell carcinoma
In transitional cell carcinoma, cancer cells grow near the urethral opening in women. In men, they proliferate where the tube passes through the prostate.

Adenocarcinoma
In this malignant disease, cancerous cells begin to grow in the glands around the urethra in both women and men.

Urethral Cancer Symptoms

Never ignore the following signs of urethral cancer:

  • Difficult or painful urination
  • An interrupted flow of urine (stops and goes)
  • Increased urge to urinate, especially at night
  • Lack of control over urination (incontinence)
  • Blood in the urine
  • A lump or thickness in the perineum or penis
  • Swelling in the groin
  • Unintended weight loss
  • Fatigue or constant lack of energy

If you have persistent symptoms, schedule a meeting with your doctor immediately.

Urethral Cancer Causes

Doctors do not know the specific causes of urethral cancer. However, certain factors may increase a man or woman’s risk, including:

  • Increasing age
  • Tobacco smoking
  • Personal or family history of bladder cancer
  • Having conditions that cause chronic inflammation in the urethra, including:
    • Sexually transmitted diseases
    • Frequent urinary tract infections

Not everyone without risk factors is immune to urethral cancer. Conversely, people who have risk factors will not always develop the disease. It is important to speak with your doctor if you think you may be at risk.

Diagnostic Tests for Urethral Cancer

Early diagnosis is key to improving your Urethral Cancer prognosis and life expectancy. Your doctor may recommend the following procedures to detect Urethral Cancer:

  • Physical exam and history
  • Pelvic exam
  • Digital rectal exam
  • Urine cytology
  • Urinalysis
  • Blood chemistry studies
  • Complete blood count (CBC)
  • Computed tomography (CT) scan
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
  • Ureteroscopy
  • Urethrography
  • Biopsy
