What is Sex Cord-Stromal Tumor?

Unlocking the possibility of remission starts with knowing vital information about the disease.

Sex cord-stromal tumors (SCSTs) are rare, forming in the stroma or the sex cords that support the ovary and where different cells develop. Out of 100 women with ovarian cancer, around five will have a SCST, according to Cancer Research UK.

There is a wide variety of ovarian sex cord-stromal tumors, which can either be noncancerous (benign) or cancerous (malignant).

Sex Cord-Stromal Tumors We Treat at New Hope Unlimited

There two main types of sex cord-stromal tumors are:

Adult type granulosa cell tumors

Granulosa cell tumors usually occur in adult women. They account for approximately 2 percent of all ovarian tumors.

Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors (androblastomas)

Virilisation — the development of male physical characteristics — characterizes Sertoli-Leydig tumors. These constitute less than 0.5 percent of ovarian tumors.

What are the Symptoms of Sex Cord-Stromal Tumor?

The warning signs of sex cord-stromal tumors may include:

  • Pain in the lower abdomen
  • Bloating that does not go away
  • Constipation
  • Frequent urination

Functioning tumors can produce hormones that cause additional symptoms, including:

  • Changes to menstrual periods, such as irregular or heavy bleeding
  • Vaginal bleeding after menopause
  • Breast tenderness or changes

If any of these symptoms are frequent, persistent, and new to you — speak with a doctor right away.

What are the Causes?

Currently, there are no known causes and risk factors for sex-cord stromal tumors.

Tests for Sex Cord-Stromal Tumors in Women

Getting an early diagnosis can improve your sex cord-stromal tumor prognosis. A doctor may order the following tests and procedures to make an accurate diagnosis:

  • Ultrasound
  • Blood tests
  • Chest x-ray
  • Computed axial tomography (CT) scan
  • Positron emission tomography (PET) scans
  • Removal of a sample tissue for testing (biopsy)

FAQs

1. What is a functioning tumor?

Functioning tumors produce the female hormone oestrogen, which can cause symptoms such as breast tenderness or abnormal vaginal bleeding. Tumors that do not create hormones are called non-functioning tumors.

2. How will New Hope Unlimited customize my treatment?

Treatment depends on several factors, including the type of tumor, how advanced it is, your age, and your overall health. Most women get diagnosed at an early stage, which is when treatments are most effective. Click on the link to read more about the alternative cancer therapies we offer.
