What is Peripheral Nerve Cancer?

Unlocking the possibility of cancer remission starts with knowing vital information about the disease.

Peripheral nerve cancer, also called malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST), is a rare malignancy that occurs in the lining of the nerves, extending from the spinal cord into the body. These nerves control the muscles, allowing the human body to walk, blink, swallow, and do other activities. Peripheral nerve cancer used to be called neurofibrosarcomas.

This disease can occur anywhere in the body, but most often affects the deep tissue of the arms, legs, and trunk. The tumors affect nerves by pressing against them (extraneural tumors) or by growing within them (intraneural tumors).

What are the Symptoms of Peripheral Nerve Cancer?

The warning signs of peripheral nerve cancer vary depending on the location of the tumor and which tissues are affected. In general, they may include:

  • Swelling or a lump under the skin
  • Pain, numbness, or tingling
  • Growing dizziness or balance issues
  • Weakness or loss of function in the affected area

If you notice any of these symptoms, seek immediate medical attention for a proper diagnosis.

What are the Causes of Peripheral Nerve Cancer?

While it is not clear what causes malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors, certain factors increase their chances of developing:

  • Previous radiation therapy for cancer
  • Having noncancerous nerve tumors, such as neurofibroma
  • Having neurofibromatosis

If you have risk factors for peripheral nerve cancer, discuss prevention with your doctor.

Diagnostic Tests for Peripheral Nerve Cancer

Early detection can improve your peripheral nerve cancer prognosis and life expectancy.

To diagnose a peripheral nerve tumor, a doctor may use the following tests:

  • Medical history and physical exam
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
  • Computed tomography (CT) scan
  • Electromyogram (EMG)
  • Nerve conduction study
  • Nerve and tumor biopsy
