What Is Paranasal Sinus and Nasal Cavity Cancer?

Battling a progressive disease begins with being armed with essential information.

Paranasal sinus and nasal cavity cancer is the uncontrollable growth and spread of cancer cells in specific tissues of the nose, including the paranasal sinuses and nasal cavity. The paranasal sinuses are small hollow spaces around the nose. They are lined with cells that produce mucus, which allows the nose to remain moist and healthy. The nasal cavity is the passageway behind the nose, in which air passes through when breathing.

According to the American Cancer Society, about 2,000 people are diagnosed with nasal cavity or paranasal sinus cancer in the United States each year.

Types of Paranasal Sinus and Nasal Cavity Cancer

New Hope Unlimited offers comprehensive care and treatment for the following types of sinus and nasal cavity cancer:

Squamous cell carcinoma
This common cancer occurs in the inside of the paranasal sinuses and the nasal cavity.

Melanoma<
Melanoma of the paranasal sinuses and the nasal cavity begins in the cells that give skin its natural color (melanocytes).

Sarcoma
In paranasal sinuses and the nasal cavity sarcoma, a cell mutation starts in the muscle or connective tissue.

Inverting papilloma
Sometimes, benign tumors called inverting papilloma can form inside the nose. A small number of cases change into cancer.

Midline granulomas
This cancer causes necrotic and destructive lesions to develop progressively in the middle of the face.

Signs of Paranasal Sinus and Nasal Cavity Cancer

Someone with sinus and nasal cavity cancer may experience:

  • Nasal congestion and stuffiness that persists or worsens
  • Blockage of either side of the nose
  • Nasal drainage in the back of the nose and throat (post-nasal drip)
  • Frequent or increased nosebleeds
  • Pus draining from the nose
  • Loss or change in sense of smell
  • Numbness or pain in certain parts of the face
  • Numbness or loosening of the teeth
  • Enlargement of the face, nose, or palate
  • Bulging of one eye
  • Constant watering of the eyes
  • Pain above or below the eyes
  • Loss or change in vision
  • Pain or pressure in either of the ears
  • Loss or changes in hearing
  • A headache or pain in the sinus areas
  • An uncomfortable sensation when opening the mouth
  • Enlarged lymph nodes in the neck

Many of these signs and symptoms are more likely to be caused by a less serious condition. Still, see your doctor immediately if you have persistent symptoms.

Causes of Paranasal Sinus and Nasal Cavity Cancer

Research about the cause of mutation in the sinuses and nasal cavity is ongoing. However, there are known risk factors for paranasal sinus and nasal cavity cancer, including:

  • Exposure to workplace chemicals or dust, such as those found in these jobs:
    • Woodworking and carpentry
    • Sawmill work
    • Metal plating
    • Flour mill or bakery work
    • Shoemaking
  • Tobacco smoking or chewing
  • Infection with human papillomavirus (HPV)
  • Being male and older than 40 years

It is important to understand that not everyone without risk factors is immune to paranasal sinus and nasal cavity cancer. Conversely, people who have risk factors will not always develop the disease. If you have risk factors, discuss them with your physician.

Diagnostic Tests for Paranasal Sinus and Nasal Cavity Cancer

Early diagnosis is key to improving your paranasal sinus and nasal cavity cancer prognosis. Tests that examine the sinuses and nasal cavity for cancer are:

  • Physical exam and medical history
  • Physical exam of the nose, face, and neck
  • X-rays of the head and neck
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
  • Nasoscopy
  • Laryngoscopy
  • Biopsy (sample tissue removal)
