What is Meningioma?

Combatting a progressive disease begins with being armed with essential information.

Meningioma is a benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous) tumor that arises from the meninges — the membranes that envelope the brain and spinal cord. Technically, a meningioma is not a brain tumor. However, it is under this category because it may compress the neighboring brain, nerves, and vessels.

A meningioma is the most common type of tumor that develops in the head. Most meningiomas grow slowly, causing no symptoms for several years. But in some cases, their impact on adjacent brain tissue, nerves, or vessels may cause permanent disabilities. Meningiomas are more common in women and are often diagnosed at older ages. Still, a meningioma may occur at any age.

Meningiomas We Treat at New Hope Unlimited

We offer treatments for many types of meningiomas, including:

Convexity Meningiomas

About 20 percent of meningiomas fall into this category. Convexity meningiomas often grow toward the front of the brain.

Falcine and Parasagittal Meningiomas

These tumors grow between the two sides of the brain, where there are several large blood vessels. Falcine and parasagittal meningiomas can interfere with blood circulation in the brain.

Intraventricular Meningiomas

Growing within the ventricles of the brain, intraventricular meningiomas can impede the flow of cerebrospinal fluid and cause persistent headaches and dizziness.

Cavernous Sinus Meningiomas

These rare tumors affect the cavernous sinus, an area that manages eye movement and allows the face to feel sensations.

New Hope Unlimited also offers treatment for less common types of meningioma tumors, including Clival Meningiomas, Foramen Magnum Meningiomas, Olfactory Groove Meningiomas, Sphenoid Wing Meningiomas, Suprasellar Meningiomas, Tentorial Meningiomas, Petrous Meningiomas, and Spinal Meningiomas.

Symptoms of Meningioma

Depending on where in the brain or spine the tumor is, signs of meningioma may include:

  • Changes in vision
  • Worsening headaches
  • Seizures
  • Hearing loss or ringing in the ears
  • Difficulty with speech
  • Weakness in the arms or legs
  • Confusion and forgetfulness
  • Drowsiness
  • Change in personality or behavior

If you have persistent symptoms, seek your doctor’s immediate medical attention.

Meningioma Causes and Risk Factors

Currently, the exact causes of meningioma are unknown. However, there are two known risk factors:

  • Exposure to radiation
  • Having neurofibromatosis type 2, a genetic disorder
  • Obesity

Diagnostic Tests for Meningioma

Early detection is key to improving your meningioma prognosis and life expectancy. Your doctor may use the following tests and procedures to make an accurate diagnosis:

  • Medical history and physical exam
  • Computed tomography (CT) scan
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
  • Biopsy and results analysis
