What is Medullary Carcinoma of the Breast?

Arming yourself with essential information is one of your best defenses against a progressive disease.

Medullary carcinoma is an extremely rare subtype of invasive ductal carcinoma, accounting for about 3 to 5 percent of all breast cancer cases. Often, the cancer cells in medullary carcinoma are high-grade in appearance and low-grade in their behavior, meaning they look aggressive but do not act the part. This malignant disease does not grow quickly, and in most cases, does not spread beyond the breast to the lymph nodes.

Symptoms of Medullary Breast Cancer

Signs of medullary carcinoma, particularly of the breast, may include:

  • A lump in the breast, which can be soft, fleshy, or firm to the touch with defined borders
  • Swollenness of the breast
  • Tenderness of the breast
  • Redness of the breast, or occurrence of a rash
  • Thickening of the breast skin

If you have persistent symptoms, speak with your doctor as soon as possible.

Risk Factors for Medullary Breast Cancer

The following increases a woman’s chances of developing medullary carcinoma:

  • Personal and family history of breast cancers
  • Being BRCA1 positive, a genetic condition

Having one or both of these risks does not mean you will get medullary carcinoma. However, speak with your doctor if you believe you are at an increased risk for breast cancer.

Tests for Medullary Carcinoma of the Breast

Early diagnosis is key to improving your medullary breast cancer prognosis and life expectancy. The general tests and procedures used to detect medullary carcinoma are:

  • Physical examination of the breast
  • Digital mammography
  • Breast ultrasound
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
  • Diagnostic surgery or biopsy
