What is a Malignant Granular Cell Tumor?

Living a full, healthy, and happy life — not just surviving — starts with knowing vital information about your illness and the holistic cancer treatments available to you.

Malignant granular cell tumor (MGCT) is a high-grade mesenchymal tumor of Schwann cell origin. Mesenchymal tumors include structures arising from mesodermal-derived precursor cells that develop into cartilage, bone, or other connective tissues. An MGCT commonly affects the thigh, extremity, and trunk, although involvement of the abdominal wall is rare.

Only a noticeably growing mass in the affected area is the identifiable symptom of a high-grade malignant granular cell tumor. Moreover, there is currently no evidence supporting any causes and risk factors associated with MGCT.

Case Report

A 50-year-old woman presented in July 2007 to a peripheral general hospital had a progressively expanding mass in the anterior abdominal wall of one-year duration. A physical examination showed that she was well built with normal vital signs. On palpation, her abdomen was soft with no intra-abdominal masses. There were no palpable lymph nodes. Her cardiac and respiratory examinations were normal. However, advanced imaging studies of the abdomen revealed a firm mass within the abdominal wall. According to the Saudi Arabian researchers whose study about this cancer case is published in Hindawi, "Gross examination of the specimen showed an ellipse of skin that measured 13 x 10 cm with subcutaneous fatty tissue measuring 11 cm in thickness. On the cut section, a well-defined nonencapsulated grayish-yellow mass measuring 7 x 6 cm with foci of necrosis was seen."

How Do Doctors Diagnose MGCT?

Due to the critical significance of early and accurate detection in improving the survival rate of a patient with a malignant granular cell tumor, an oncologist will order a number of diagnostic tests to produce rapid correct findings. These procedures may include, but are not limited to:

  • Medical history and physical exam
  • Computed axial tomography (CAT) scan
  • Positron emission tomography (PET) scan
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
  • Radiography, such as X-rays
  • Biopsy or sample tissue removal for lab testing

Were you diagnosed with a malignant granular cell tumor? If yes, the next most important step to take is to plan your treatment with healthcare specialists who treat cancer differently, but definitely better.
