What is Low-Grade Fibromyxoid Sarcoma (LGFMS)?

Living a full, healthy, and happy life — not just surviving — starts with knowing vital information about your illness and the holistic cancer treatments available to you.

Low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma is a slow-growing form of soft tissue sarcoma. In most cases, it occurs in the deep soft tissues of the thighs, chest, or abdomen. This malignant (cancerous) condition was reported originally by Evans HL in 1987, who described ten additional cases in 1993. Since then, scarce cases have been recorded.

The cancer cells of LGFMS usually have a specific genetic mutation called a translocation, which the National Cancer Institute defines as "part of one chromosome switches places with part of another chromosome." This characteristic allows diagnosticians to narrow down which soft tissue sarcoma is present in the human body, particularly since there are more than 50 different types.

Only a painless mass or lump, typically in the proximal extremities, is the known symptom of low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma. Furthermore, there are currently no identifiable causes and risk factors for LGFMS.

How Do Doctors Diagnose LGFMS?

The following diagnostic tests play a crucial role in evaluating a suspicious mass and producing accurate findings that can help improve a low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma prognosis:

  • Medical history and physical exam
  • Positron emission tomography (PET) scan
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
  • Computerized axial tomography (CAT) scan
  • Radiography, such as X-rays
  • Sample tissue removal through a biopsy

Were you diagnosed with low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma? If yes, the next most important step is to plan your treatment with a team that treats cancer differently, but definitely better.
