What is Liposarcoma?

Winning the battle against a life-threatening disease begins with being armed with essential information.

Liposarcoma is a rare form of soft tissue sarcoma that arises from mesenchymal cells, specifically abnormal fat cells in deep soft tissue. This malignant (cancerous) disease often develops in the abdomen, although it can occur in any area of the human body. Liposarcoma is most common in adults between the ages of 50 and 65.

Liposarcomas We Treat at New Hope Unlimited

There are four types of liposarcoma:

Well-differentiated liposarcoma

The most common type of liposarcoma. This cancer tends to grow slowly and usually does not spread to other parts of the body.

Myxoid liposarcoma

The second most common type of liposarcoma, whose cells can form a unique pattern. Myxoid liposarcoma is more likely to invade other parts of the body.

Pleomorphic liposarcoma

Pleomorphic liposarcoma is a less common form of the cancer. However, it often spreads very quickly.

Dedifferentiated liposarcoma

This rare cancer occurs when a slow-growing tumor begins to transform into a faster growing and more aggressive cancer.

Liposarcoma Symptoms

Signs of liposarcoma may include the following, depending on the location of the tumor:

  • A lump beneath the skin, particularly around or behind the knees or on the thighs
  • Swelling
  • Pain and discomfort
  • Reduced range of motion of the limbs
  • Feeling full sooner when eating
  • Cramping and constipation
  • Urinary difficulties
  • Bloody stool, or fecal matter that looks black or tarry
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fatigue

If you notice changes in the way your body functions or the way you feel, see a doctor as soon as possible.

Liposarcoma Causes

It is unclear what causes this malignancy, but the following are risk factors for liposarcoma:

  • Family cancer syndromes, such as Gardner syndrome and neurofibromatosis
  • A family history of liposarcoma or other soft tissue carcinomas
  • Previous treatments with radiation therapy
  • Exposure to certain chemicals, including vinyl chloride, and dioxin

If you have risk factors, discuss prevention with your physician.

Liposarcoma Diagnosis

Early detection is key to improving your liposarcoma prognosis and life expectancy. Your doctor may order the following tests to determine whether you have the disease:

  • Computerized tomography (CT) scan
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
  • Biopsy and lab tests

FAQs

1.How common is liposarcoma?

Liposarcomas are rare, representing less than 1 percent of all newly diagnosed cancers. While the causes of liposarcomas remain unknown, they are often noted after a “hard lump” develops and remains after trauma. However, trauma or injury is not a risk factor for this disease.

2.Can I bring a caregiver to your treatment facility?

Absolutely. New Hope Unlimited encourages you to bring a friend, family member, or caregiver who you feel comfortable talking with about your cancer journey. We will provide an extra bed in your room for your company.
