Pulmonary artery intimal sarcomas are rare malignant (cancerous) tumors that, in most cases, impact larger vessels such as the large vein carrying deoxygenated blood into the heart (inferior vena cava); the pulmonary arteries that deliver deoxygenated blood to the lungs for purification; and the main artery of the body (aorta). Except for a systolic ejection murmur in the pulmonary area, the results of his physical examination were normal.
The specialists at Texas Heart Institute performed a longitudinal pulmonary arteriotomy, which exposed the problem. In the lumen of the pulmonary artery was a large round mass that extended distally to the main pulmonary artery branches. A positron emission tomography (PET) scan showed intense uptake in the right lateral cervical, mediastinal, and hilar lymph nodes.
After the specialists excised the sizable mass, the patient's condition improved. One month, six months and sixteen months after his operation screening through echocardiography, magnetic resonance imaging, and computed tomography revealed no recurrence of the cancer.
What are the Signs of Intimal Sarcoma?
