What is Intimal Sarcoma of the Pulmonary Artery?

Living a full, healthy, and happy life — not just surviving — starts with knowing vital information about your illness and the holistic cancer treatments available to you.

Pulmonary artery intimal sarcomas are rare malignant (cancerous) tumors that, in most cases, impact larger vessels such as the large vein carrying deoxygenated blood into the heart (inferior vena cava); the pulmonary arteries that deliver deoxygenated blood to the lungs for purification; and the main artery of the body (aorta). The prognosis is generally poor. Therefore, rapid and accurate diagnosis is imperative for effective treatment.

Case Report

In July 2005, a 42-year-old man with chest pain and exertional dyspnea was referred to the Texas Heart Institute after receiving a pulmonary thromboembolism diagnosis. The patient had taken an anticoagulant agent for this presumed condition for about three months. Except for a systolic ejection murmur in the pulmonary area, the results of his physical examination were normal.

The specialists at Texas Heart Institute performed a longitudinal pulmonary arteriotomy, which exposed the problem. In the lumen of the pulmonary artery was a large round mass that extended distally to the main pulmonary artery branches. A positron emission tomography (PET) scan showed intense uptake in the right lateral cervical, mediastinal, and hilar lymph nodes.

After the specialists excised the sizable mass, the patient's condition improved. One month, six months and sixteen months after his operation screening through echocardiography, magnetic resonance imaging, and computed tomography revealed no recurrence of the cancer.

What are the Signs of Intimal Sarcoma?

Intimal sarcoma of the pulmonary artery is extremely uncommon with only 200 reported cases from 1923 to 2012. In consequence, limited medical guidelines describe the symptoms of PA intimal sarcoma. The only known indicators of this malignant disease are:

  • Persistent chest pains
  • Shortness of breath (dyspnea)
  • A filling defect within the pulmonary arteries

How Do Doctors Diagnose Intimal Sarcoma?

Due to the high importance of early detection in improving a pulmonary artery intimal sarcoma prognosis, an oncologist will order a series of diagnostic tests to produce immediate accurate findings, if he or she suspects cancer after reviewing your physical exam results.

Diagnosing intimal sarcoma of the pulmonary artery and determining the extent of cancer often necessitates, but are not limited to the following procedures:

Were you diagnosed with intimal sarcoma? The next most critical step is to plan your treatment with a medical team that treats cancer differently, but definitely better.
