What is an Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor?

Thriving — not just surviving — begins with knowing vital information about your illness and the combination of conventional and holistic cancer treatments available to you.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is an uncommon, usually benign (noncancerous) but sometimes malignant (cancerous) tumor comprising cells called myofibroblastic spindle cells. IMT commonly arises among children or young adults, although it can impact men and women of any age. An Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor can emerge in almost any part of the body, although it is most prevalent in the lung, peritoneum (lining of the abdominal cavity and internal organs), orbit (eye socket), and mesentery.

Because malignant IMTs are rarer, especially among older patients, our focus here at New Hope Unlimited is to provide alternative IMT treatments for adult patients.

What are the Indicators of IMT?

The symptoms of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors vary depending on the location of a tumor. Some people with an IMT do not produce symptoms (asymptomatic), while others may experience the following signs and symptoms that our cancer care team aims to reverse:

  • Nonspecific respiratory symptoms, such as:
    • Difficulty breathing (dyspnea)
    • Rapid breathing (tachypnea)
    • Deep breathing (hyperpnea)
    • Shallow breathing (hypopnea)
  • Unintended weight loss
  • Fevers and night sweats
  • Pain, discomfort, or swelling in the affected area
  • A general feeling of illness (malaise)

What Caused Your Cancer?

Similar to most complex malignancies, scientists have not discovered the underlying causes of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor. However, some medical researchers believe that IMT is a true neoplasm, while others assume that IMT represents an immunologic response to either an infectious or noninfectious agent. There have been several reported associations between IMT and infections, including:

There have also been reported links between IMT and:

Because of the limited medical guidelines available to support or refute these infectious and noninfectious associations, the mechanism behind the occurrence of IMTs remains unclear.

How Do Doctors Diagnose UPSC?

Your doctor is likely to conduct the following diagnostic tests to evaluate the area of concern and produce accurate findings:

  • Physical and medical exam
  • Computed axial tomography (CAT) scan
  • Positron emission tomography (PET) scan
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
  • Ultrasound
  • Molecular diagnostics
  • Sample tissue removal through a biopsy

Were you diagnosed with a cancerous inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor? The next most important step is to plan your treatment with healthcare specialists who treat cancer differently, but definitely better.
