What is Gastric Linitis Plastica?

Thriving, not just surviving, begins with knowing vital information about your illness and the combination of conventional and holistic cancer treatments available to you.

Linitis plastica — also known as Brinton's disease, leather bottle stomach, or gastric scirrhous carcinoma — is a morphological variant of infiltrating stomach cancer. This rare malignant (cancerous) disorder is a form of adenocarcinoma and accounts for approximately 3 to 19 percent of all gastric adenocarcinoma cases. It impacts the muscles of the stomach wall, making it thick, rubbery, and more rigid. As a result, the stomach cannot store as much food and it does not stretch or move as it normally should when digesting.

The cause of malignant linitis plastica could be metastatic infiltration (cancer that has spread beyond the original layer of tissue), particularly breast and lung cancer.

What are the Signs of Gastric Linitis Plastica?

Linitis plastica of the stomach is a long-known ailment, with initial reports dating back to the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. According to a more recent study from 2013, gastric linitis plastica does not cause early symptoms. However, when it does present signs and symptoms, it could be signaling an advanced form of the disease.

Here at New Hope Unlimited, among our treatment goals is to reverse the commonly reported linitis plastica symptoms, which are similar to stomach cancer symptoms. These include but are not limited to:

  • Indigestion
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Unintended weight loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Pain in the abdomen
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea and constipation

How Do Doctors Diagnose Linitis Plastica?

Due to the critical importance of early detection in improving a gastric linitis plastica prognosis, a physician will order a number of diagnostic tests to produce rapid accurate findings, if he or she suspects cancer after a thorough review of your physical exam results and personal and family medical histories.

Diagnosing gastric linitis plastica and determining the extent of malignancy requires the same procedures for detecting stomach cancer:

  • Complete blood test
  • Fecal occult blood test
  • Endoscopic ultrasound
  • Upper gastrointestinal series
  • Upper endoscopy
  • Laparoscopy
  • X-rays of the chest
  • Computerized tomography (CT) scan
  • Positron emission tomography (PET) scan
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
  • Sample tissue removal through a biopsy

Were you diagnosed with linitis plastica? The next most important step is to plan your treatment with a medical team that treats cancer differently, but definitely better.
