What Is Endometrial Cancer?

Battling a progressive disease begins with being armed with essential information.

Cancer of the uterine endometrium, also known as endometrial carcinoma, is the uncontrollable growth and spread of cancer cells in the inner lining of the uterus (endometrium). The uterus is a hollow, pear-shaped pelvic organ where fetal development occurs. Malignancy (cancer) in the endometrium often manifests in abnormal vaginal bleeding, which prompts women to consult their doctors and detect the disease at an early stage.

According to the National Cancer Institute, endometrial carcinoma accounts for about 6 percent of all types of cancers in American women. It is also the most common type of uterine cancer.

Endometrial Cancers We Treat at New Hope Unlimited

There are several types of endometrial cancer, including:

Adenocarcinoma
Adenocarcinoma is the most common form of endometrial cancer and accounts for 85 percent of all cases.

Carcinosarcoma
This rare disease makes up less than five percent of all cancers in the uterus.

Small cell carcinoma
Small cell carcinoma is a subtype of neuroendocrine endometrial cancer and often categorizes as a high-grade tumor.

Squamous cell carcinoma
These extremely rare tumors have unclear pathogenesis.

Transitional carcinoma
Transitional carcinoma is most common in the ovary, but there are isolated cases described in the endometrium.

Undifferentiated carcinoma
These cancers create diagnostic challenges because they do not show features of differentiation when examined under a microscope.

Mucinous adenocarcinoma, clear-cell carcinoma, and papillary serous adenocarcinoma are less common types of endometrial cancer. They are more aggressive, often spreading outside the uterus at the time of diagnosis.

Endometrial Cancer Symptoms

Women should never ignore the following signs of endometrial cancer:

  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding between periods or after menopause
  • Unusual vaginal discharge that that may be watery, bloody, and foul smelling
  • Difficult or painful urination
  • Discomfort or pain during intercourse
  • Unexpected weight fluctuations

If you have persistent symptoms, see your doctor immediately.

Endometrial Cancer Causes

Doctors do not know the specific causes of endometrial cancer. However, certain factors may increase a woman’s risk, including:

  • Obesity and a diet high in fat
  • Starting menstruation at an early age
  • Changes in the balance of female hormones
  • Never having been pregnant
  • Ovarian diseases, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
  • An inherited colon cancer syndrome
  • Being a woman aged 40 and older
  • Personal or family history of endometrial cancer
  • Hormone therapy for breast cancer
  • Pelvic radiation to address other kinds of cancer

It is important to understand that not everyone without risk factors is immune to endometrial cancer. Conversely, people who have risk factors will not always develop the disease. If you have risk factors, discuss them with your doctor.

Diagnostic Tests for Endometrial Cancer

Early diagnosis is key to improving your endometrial cancer prognosis and life expectancy. Your doctor may recommend the following procedures to detect endometrial cancer:

  • Medical history and physical exam
  • Pelvic examination
  • Transvaginal ultrasound
  • Hysteroscopy
  • Endometrial biopsy
  • Dilation and curettage
