What is Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans (DFSP)?

Thriving — not just surviving — begins with knowing vital information about your disease and the available treatment options.

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans is a rare form of soft tissue sarcoma. It begins in connective tissue cells found in the middle layer of your skin. The malignant condition may first appear as a bruise or scar. As it grows, lumps of tissue called protuberans may form near the surface of your skin. The most common site is the torso, but it can also occur on the legs, arms, buttocks, head, and neck.

What are the Types of Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans?

New Hope Unlimited offers comprehensive treatments for different variants of DFSP, including but not limited to:

Bednar Tumors

These malignant growths contain dark-colored cells called melanin-containing dendritic cells. Bednar tumors account for 1 to 5 percent of all DFSP cases.

Myxoid DFSP Tumors

These tumors contain an abnormal type of connective tissue called myxoid stroma. It is relatively uncommon, which presents some diagnostic challenges.

Fibrosarcomatous DFSP

These rare tumors have a higher chance of metastasizing (spreading) than other types of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans.

What are the Signs of Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans?

Our unique combination of conventional and holistic cancer treatments aim to reverse the early symptoms of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, including:

  • A pimple-like growth or rough, wrinkled patch of skin
  • No tenderness or pain where the growth or patch forms
  • Changes in the growth or patch

As DFSP grows and progresses, it can add pressure to the top layer of your skin. You may notice a lump called protuberan, which may feel solid and rubbery.

As the lump enlarges, the affected skin stretches and may cause the following symptoms:

  • The skin becomes tender or painful
  • The skin starts cracking and bleeding
  • The skin feels hard and the lump seems cemented

What Caused Your Skin Cancer?

What causes the mutation that leads to dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans remains unknown. However, the following risk factors may increase a person’s chance of developing this disease:

  • Being pregnant
  • Being a woman between the ages of 30 and 50
  • Being African-American
  • Having a rearrangement of genetic material between chromosomes 17 and 22

How Doctors Diagnose Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans

Since an early diagnosis improves your dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans prognosis, a doctor will order a series of tests to produce accurate findings. These tests may include:

  • Dermatoscopy
  • Medical history and physical exam
  • Skin biopsy or sample tissue removal for testing
  • Imaging studies to detect distant metastasis, such as:
    • Computed tomography (CT) scan
    • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan

After receiving a confirmed dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans diagnosis, the next most crucial step is to plan your treatment.
