What is Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer?

Thriving — not just surviving — begins with knowing vital information about your disease and its treatment options.

Anaplastic thyroid cancer is one of the four types of thyroid cancer. This malignant (cancerous) disease is one of the fastest-growing and most aggressive of all cancers. Doctors also refer to it as undifferentiated thyroid cancer because its cells do not look or behave like typical cells of the thyroid.

According to Columbia University, the five-year relative survival rate is less than 5 percent. While overall survival statistics are disheartening, it is important to have new hope and know that there are many long-term survivors.

Stages of Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer

This stage 4 cancer is divided into the following:

Stage 4A

Cancer is contained in the thyroid.

Stage 4B

Cancer has metastasized (spread) into the tissue around the thyroid gland, and possibly the lymph nodes.

Stage 4C

Cancer has metastasized to distant areas of the body, including the bones, lungs, or brain and possibly the lymph nodes.

Signs of Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer

Here at New Hope Unlimited, our combination of orthodox and unorthodox cancer treatments aim to address the symptoms of anaplastic thyroid cancer.

This malignancy is extremely fast-growing, meaning its symptoms can progress within a few weeks. During its early stages, some common signs include:

  • A noticeable lump or nodule in the neck
  • Difficulty swallowing food or prescription pills
  • Shortness of breath, especially when lying down

As the cancer grows, additional symptoms may include:

  • Voice hoarseness
  • Enlarged lymph nodes
  • A hard mass in the lower front part of the neck
  • A persistent cough, with or without blood

What Caused Your Cancer

The cause of anaplastic thyroid cancer is unknown. However, certain factors may increase the risk of developing the disease, including:

  • Being 60 years old or older
  • Having a goiter — the abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland
  • Previous radiation exposure to the neck or chest

How Doctors Diagnose Thyroid Cancer

A diagnostician might order the following tests and procedures to produce accurate findings:

  • Medical and physical examination
  • Blood laboratory studies
  • Biopsy or fine-needle aspiration
  • Laryngoscopy (looking at the voice box)
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
  • Ultrasound of the neck and thyroid gland
  • Computerized tomography (CT) scan

After receiving an anaplastic thyroid cancer diagnosis, the next most crucial step is to plan your treatment.
