What is Adenosquamous Lung Carcinoma?

Thriving — not just surviving — begins with knowing vital information about your disease and the holistic cancer treatments available to you.

Adenosquamous carcinoma (ASC) of the lung is a rare subtype of non-small cell lung cancer. It contains two types of cells: squamous cells and gland-like cells. ASC features similar components to lung adenocarcinoma (ADC) and lung squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). However, although ASC has biological characteristics of both ADC and SCC, it is not a direct hybrid of the two malignant diseases. The sporadic and aggressive behavior of adenosquamous lung carcinoma causes more frequent brain metastases than other lung cancers, which makes early detection extremely critical to survivorship.

What are the Signs of ASC?

ASC is a dangerous, life-threatening disease that requires immediate treatment. The symptoms of adenosquamous lung carcinomas are similar to most lung cancers at first. However, they progress much faster.

The signs and symptoms of ASC of the lung may include:

  • Persistent coughing that causes chest pains
  • Presence of blood or mucus while coughing
  • Changes in your voice, such as hoarseness
  • Shortness of breath and/or wheezing
  • Growing loss of desire to eat or drink anything
  • Unintended and unexplainable weight loss

If ASC of the lung metastasizes (spreads) to other parts of the body, symptoms may include:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Coordination problems
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)
  • Numbness or weakness in an arm or leg
  • Pain in the bone

What Caused Your Cancer?

What causes the mutation that leads to the development of adenosquamous lung carcinoma is not understood. The only known risk factors are smoking and advancing age, which has always been associated with lung cancer. ASC is also more common in older male smokers.

How Do Doctors Diagnose ASC?

Adenosquamous lung carcinoma is one of the most difficult disorders to diagnose. Pathology of a surgically removed gross specimen is the most effective means for accurately diagnosing ASC. Fibrobronchoscopy brush biopsy, CT-guided biopsy, trans-bronchial needle aspiration biopsy, and other reliable diagnostic tests have been proven inefficient for diagnosing this rare and aggressive malignancy.

If an oncologist detected adenosquamous lung carcinoma in your body, act fast and plan your cancer treatment with New Hope Medical Center.
