What Is Acute Myelocytic Leukemia?

Combating a progressive disease begins with being armed with essential information.

Also referred to as acute granulocytic leukemia, acute myelogenous leukemia, acute non-lymphocytic leukemia, and acute myeloid leukemia (AML) — acute myelocytic leukemia is is cancer of the blood and bone marrow. “Acute” means that this leukemia can progress rapidly, and “myeloid” refers to the type of cell this leukemia arises from. In AML, the bone marrow mainly produces abnormal white blood cells. However, it can also create abnormal red blood cells and platelets.

Acute myelocytic leukemia is one of the most common types of leukemia among adult men and women. According to the American Cancer Society, about 19,520 new cases are diagnosed each year.

Types of Acute Myelocytic Leukemia

AML is first described by its morphology or how cancerous cells appear under the microscope. The type of normal and immature white blood cell it most closely resembles classifies AML. New Hope treats many types of AML, including:

  • Myeloblastic (M0) - on special analysis
  • Myeloblastic (M1) - without maturation
  • Myeloblastic (M2) - with maturation
  • Promyelocytic (M3)
  • Myelomonocytic (M4)
  • Monocytic (M5)
  • Erythroleukemia (M6)
  • Megakaryocytic (M7)

Acute Myelocytic Leukemia Symptoms

Signs of acute myelocytic leukemia include:

  • Frequent infections
  • Recurrent bone pain
  • Sudden paleness of the skin
  • Quick bruising
  • Shortness of breath
  • Lethargy and fatigue
  • Unusual bleeding, such as nosebleeds and bleeding from the gums

Consult a medical professional immediately if you experience any symptoms of acute myelocytic leukemia.

Acute Myelocytic Leukemia Causes

Little is known about what causes acute myelocytic leukemia. However, factors that may increase a man or woman’s risk include:

  • Increasing age
  • Previous cancer treatment with chemotherapy
  • Exposure to radiation
  • Dangerous chemical exposure
  • Tobacco use
  • Genetic disorders, including down syndrome
  • Other blood disorders, such as myelodysplasia, myelofibrosis, polycythemia vera or thrombocythemia

It is essential to understand that not everyone with risk factors develops acute myelocytic leukemia, and not everyone without risk factors is safe from the disease.

Diagnostic Tests for Acute Myelocytic Leukemia

If you have signs or symptoms of acute myelogenous leukemia, your doctor may recommend the following diagnostic tests:

  • Blood tests
  • Bone marrow biopsy
  • Lumbar puncture (spinal tap)
  • Genomic testing

An early and correct diagnosis, followed by proper treatment, are crucial factors in improving your AML prognosis.
