What is Acral Lentiginous Melanoma (ALM)?

Living a full, healthy, and happy life — not just surviving — starts with knowing vital information about your disease and the available treatment options.

Acral lentiginous melanoma is a form of malignant melanoma, which develops when the skin cells called melanocytes become cancerous. Melanocytes are melanin- or pigment-producing neural crest-derived cells. In this type of malignancy, the word “acral” means the occurrence of melanoma on the palms of the hand or soles of the feet. Meanwhile, “lentiginous” refers to the spot or irregularity that is much darker than the surrounding skin.

Acral lentiginous melanoma is the most common form of melanoma among people with darker skin and those of Asian descent. However, it can still affect people of all skin types and races.

What are the Signs of Acral Lentiginous Melanoma?

Here at New Hope Unlimited, among the intentions of our cancer care team and alternative skin cancer treatment is to target the root cause and symptoms of acral lentiginous melanoma.

The most visible symptom is a dark spot of skin surrounded by a patient’s normal skin color on or around the hands, feet, or nail beds. However, ALM spots are not always dark-colored or dark at all. Some spots may appear orange or red, which scientists call amelanotic (non-pigmented).

Furthermore, the following five signs may help determine whether a spot is suspicious for ALM:

  • Asymmetry
  • Border irregularity
  • Color variation
  • Large diameter
  • Evolving or changing

Pain and a nail streak that damages the fingernail are two additional symptoms that may occur.

What Caused Your Skin Cancer?

Unlike other types of melanoma, acral lentiginous melanoma is not associated with excess UVA and UVB exposure. Instead, genetic mutations may contribute to its development.

How Do Doctors Diagnose Acral Lentiginous Melanoma?

Acral lentiginous melanoma in situ is often not dangerous and only becomes life-threatening if an invasive melanoma develops within it. To find cancer early and improve an acral lentiginous melanoma prognosis, a doctor will conduct some tests, including:

  • Medical history and physical examination
  • Dermatoscopy
  • Biopsy or sample tissue removal for testing
  • Imaging studies to detect distant metastasis:
    • Computed tomography (CT) scan
    • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan

If you receive an acral lentiginous melanoma diagnosis, the next most crucial step is to plan your treatment.
