What is a Malignant Glomus Tumor?

Thriving — not just surviving — begins with knowing vital information about your disease and the holistic cancer treatment options available to you.

Malignant glomus tumors (MGTs) are rare neoplasms stemming from the glomus body, a component of the dermis layer of skin involved in regulating body temperature. MGTs account for less than 1.5 percent of soft tissue tumors, most of which are located in the hand, wrist, and foot. The average duration of signs and symptoms is reported to be between 7 and 11 years before diagnosis. Even then, most patients are asymptomatic, and the only known indicators of MGTs are tenderness, hypersensitivity, and sometimes pain in the affected area. There are currently no identifiable causes and evidence-supported risk factors for malignant glomus tumors, and its sporadic incidence rate makes it challenging for medical researchers to conduct further studies.

Case Report

A 59-year-old right-handed woman from Russia had a 40-year history of extreme tenderness and hypersensitivity in the palm of her left hand, according to a published study from 2016. The patient reported that she began experiencing uncomfortable symptoms after her hand was accidentally stepped by a boot with cleated soles. She had undergone surgical exploration about 5 years after the injury, although no details were available. Her symptoms had progressed in severity, therefore she always protected her hand by elevating it and avoiding all external contact. Advanced imaging studies later revealed a 5.0 × 4.9 × 1.5 cm mass in the palm of her hand.

How Do Doctors Diagnose a Malignant Glomus Tumor?

Due to the irrefutable importance of early detection in improving the prognosis of a patient with a cancerous glomus tumor, a diagnostician will conduct a variety of tests to produce immediate accurate findings. The procedures may include, but are not limited to:

  • Medical history and physical exam
  • Computed axial tomography (CAT) scan
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
  • Positron emission tomography (PET) scan
  • Biopsy or sample tissue removal for lab testing

Were you diagnosed with a malignant glomus tumor? The next most critical step is to plan your treatment with a team that treats cancer differently, but definitely better.
