What is Laryngeal Cancer?

Winning the battle against a progressive disease starts with being armed with essential information.

The larynx, commonly known as the voice box, is found in the throat. Laryngeal cancer is an uncontrollable growth of cells that overwhelm and cause damage to the larynx. Most laryngeal cancers develop in the squamous cells, which line the inside of the larynx. Laryngeal cancer is a form of head and neck cancer. In the United States, about 13,000 people are diagnosed with laryngeal cancer each year, and about 3,700 die from the disease annually.

Laryngeal Cancers We Treat at New Hope Unlimited

About 60 percent of laryngeal cancers begin in the glottis, 35 percent in the supraglottis, and the rest in the subglottis. The most common types of laryngeal cancer are:

Squamous cell carcinoma

Squamous cell carcinoma occurs in the thin, flat cells that line much of the throat.

Adenocarcinoma

Adenocarcinoma develops in the glandular cells of the throat.

New Hope Unlimited also offers treatment for more rare types of laryngeal cancer, including lymphoepithelioma, spindle cell carcinoma, verrucous cancer, undifferentiated carcinoma, and lymphomas.

Laryngeal Cancer Symptoms in Men and Women

Signs of laryngeal cancer often include:

  • A sore throat
  • A persistent cough
  • Voice changes, such as hoarseness
  • Throat dysphonia (problems producing voice sounds)
  • A lump or mass in the neck
  • Pain or discomfort when swallowing
  • Ear pain

If you experience the following symptoms, see your doctor immediately:

  • Difficulty breathing (Dyspnea)
  • A feeling that something is stuck in the throat (Globus sensation)
  • Coughing up blood (Hemoptysis)
  • High-pitched and noisy breathing (Stridor)

Laryngeal Cancer Risk Factors

Because cancer is an unpredictable disease, the exact cause of laryngeal cancer is not understood. However, certain factors may increase a man or woman’s risk:

  • Increasing age
  • Tobacco use
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Occupational exposure to:
    • Wood dust
    • Sulfuric acid mist
    • Nickel
    • Manufacturing of mustard gas
  • Infection with Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
  • A personal history of head and neck cancer

If you have risk factors for laryngeal cancer, discuss them with your doctor.

Laryngeal Cancer Diagnosis

Early diagnosis plays a significant role in improving your laryngeal cancer prognosis and life expectancy. Your physician may recommend the following tests to find cancer of the larynx:

  • Medical and physical exam
  • Laryngoscopy
  • Magnetic resonance imaging scan
  • Positron emission tomography scan
  • Computerized axial tomography scan
  • Biopsy
