What is Invasive Lobular Carcinoma?

Battling a progressive disease begins with being armed with essential information.

Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC), also called infiltrating lobular carcinoma, is breast cancer that has broken through the wall of the milk-producing lobule and started invading the tissues of the breast. Over time, ILC can metastasize (spread) to the lymph nodes and other areas of the body.

Invasive lobular carcinoma is the second most common type of breast cancer after invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC). According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), over 180,000 women in the United States receive an invasive breast cancer diagnosis each year. About 10 percent of all invasive breast cancers are ILC.

Signs of Invasive Lobular Carcinoma

The following unusual changes can be the first sign of breast cancer, including infiltrating lobular carcinoma:

  • Swelling in one or both breasts
  • Breast skin irritation, dimpling, or redness
  • Persistent breast pain
  • Recurrent nipple pain
  • A newly inverted nipple
  • Thickening of the breast skin or nipple
  • Unusual nipple discharge
  • A lump in the underarm area

Consult your doctor immediately if you have persistent symptoms of invasive lobular carcinoma.

What are the Causes and Risk Factors?

Medical research about the exact cause of mutation in the breast is ongoing. However, certain factors can increase the risk of invasive lobular carcinoma in women, such as:

  • Older age
  • Personal history of noncancerous breast conditions
  • Personal and family history of malignant breast diseases
  • Being BRCA1 or BRCA2 positive
  • Being pregnant for the first time after 30 years old
  • Unhealthy weight or obesity
  • Exposure to hormone replacement therapy after menopause

Speak with your physician if you believe you are at an increased risk for ILC and breast cancer recurrence.

Diagnostic Tests for Invasive Lobular Carcinoma

Early diagnosis is key to improving your ILC breast cancer prognosis and life expectancy. The tests and procedures used to find invasive lobular carcinoma are:

  • Mammography
  • Breast ultrasound
  • Breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
  • Diagnostic surgery or biopsy
