What Patients Say About Cancer Treatment at New Hope
What is HER2-Positive Breast Cancer?
Unlocking the possibility of cancer remission begins with knowing vital information about your disease.
HER2-positive breast cancer is a prevalent form of malignant breast disease, in which breast cancer cells have a protein receptor called human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 or HER2. This protein normally helps breast cells grow, divide, and repair themselves. However, when an error occurs in the gene that controls the HER2 protein, the body produces an excess of these receptors. As a result, the breast cells grow and multiply uncontrollably.
About 1 in 5 of breast cancers are HER2-positive, which is more aggressive than other breast cancer types. And currently, it is unknown what causes the mutation leading to HER2-positive breast cancer.
What are the Signs of HER2-Positive Breast Cancer?
The most common indication of any malignant breast disease is a lump in your breast, which feels different from the area around it.
HER2-positive breast cancer may additionally present the following symptoms:
- Swelling of the breast
- Changes in the shape of the breast
- A painful sensation in the breast or nipple
- Skin changes, including irritation and dimpling
- Redness or thickness of the breast skin or nipple
- Unusual discharge from the nipple
Testing for HER2 Status
The tests and procedures used to diagnose breast cancer include:
- Breast exam
- Mammogram
- Breast MRI scan
- Breast ultrasound
- Biopsy
Once you receive a breast cancer diagnosis, undergoing one or more of these additional tests will help your doctor determine whether your malignant disease is HER2-positive:
- IHC test. Uses specific antibodies that help identify the HER2 protein in a sample of breast cancer tissue.
- FISH test. Uses fluorescent pieces of DNA that adhere to the HER2 gene in cells, which then allows a pathologist to distinguish and count them under a microscope.
- POT-Light HER2 CISH and the Inform HER2 Dual ISH tests. Uses stains that color HER2 genes in a tissue sample, allowing a pathologist to count them under a microscope.
In the event that the results of a single test are not clear, your doctor may order another type of procedure. And, after receiving a HER2-positive breast cancer diagnosis, the next most crucial step is to plan your treatment.
