What Is Gastrointestinal Cancer?

Battling a progressive disease begins with being armed with essential information.

Gastrointestinal (GI) cancer, is the most widespread malignancy in the U.S. because it encompasses some of the most common cancers of the human digestive system, including the esophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas, and colon. Cancer affecting the gastrointestinal tract can be very aggressive, impacting both survival and quality of life. Treatment will depend heavily on the specific type of cancer, its stage, and other health factors.

Types of Gastrointestinal Cancers

New Hope Unlimited offers a powerful combination of conventional and alternative treatments for over 200 cancers, including but not limited to the following GI cancers:

Anal cancer
A disease in which malignant cells form in the tissues of the anus.

Bile duct cancer
A rare cancer that affects the small tubes connecting the liver and small intestine.

Colon cancer
Cancer of the large intestine, which is the final part of the digestive tract.

Esophageal cancer
A disease that occurs in the food pipe running between the throat and the stomach.

Gallbladder cancer
Begins in the small, pear-shaped organ (gallbladder) on the right side of your abdomen, just beneath your liver.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors
A type of tumor that occurs in the GI tract, most commonly in the stomach or small intestine.

Liver cancer
Comprises malignant hepatic tumors in or on the liver.

Pancreatic cancer
A disease in which malignant cells form in the tissues of the pancreas.

Rectal cancer
Occurs in concluding part of the large intestine that terminates in the anus (rectum).

Stomach cancer
Also known as gastric cancer, this disease manifests in the buildup of abnormal cells in the stomach.

Gastrointestinal Cancer Symptoms

Signs of gastrointestinal cancer depend on the tumor location and cancer type. Common symptoms include:

  • A suspicious lump or mass in the body
  • Abdominal pain, bloating, and general discomfort
  • Sudden changes in bowel habits
  • Rectal bleeding or blood in stool
  • Loss of appetite, leading to weight loss
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fatigue or constant lack of energy

If you have persistent symptoms, meet with your physician immediately.

Gastrointestinal Cancer Causes

Research about the potential causes of GI cancer is ongoing. However, certain factors may increase a man or woman’s chances of developing the disease.

Risk factors for gastrointestinal cancer vary depending on the cancer type. They may include:

  • Increasing age
  • Personal or family history of GI cancers
  • Certain inherited genetic disorders, such as:
    • Lynch syndrome
    • Hereditary diffuse gastric cancer
    • Hereditary breast and ovarian cancer
    • Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP)
  • Eating a diet high in sodium, animal fat, and processed goods
  • Unhealthy weight or obesity
  • Tobacco smoking and chewing
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Previous surgery or health conditions

Not everyone without risk factors is immune to gastrointestinal cancer. Conversely, people who have risk factors will not always develop the disease. If you have risk factors, it is important to discuss them with your doctor.

Diagnostic Tests for Gastrointestinal Cancer

Early diagnosis is key to improving your gastrointestinal cancer prognosis and life expectancy. Your doctor may order these tests and procedures to make an accurate GI cancer diagnosis:

  • Medical history and physical exam
  • Upper endoscopy
  • Barium swallow
  • Computerized tomography (CT or CAT) scan
  • Positron emission tomography (PET) scan
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
  • Endoscopic ultrasound
  • Biopsy and lab testing
