What is Retinoblastoma?

Understanding the vital aspects of your disease is the first step toward cancer remission.

Adult-onset retinoblastoma is a rare form of eye cancer. It starts in the retina — a layer at the back of the eyeball that senses light and sends visual images to the brain.

Before birth, the eyes begin to develop. During the early stages of development, the eyes have cells called retinoblasts. Retinoblasts multiply to create new cells that fill the retina. At some point, these cells stop multiplying and become mature retinal cells. In some cases, something goes wrong with this process. Rather than reaching maturity, some retinoblasts pursue to grow out of control, forming a cancer called retinoblastoma.

Because this malignant (cancerous) disease is almost unheard of in older patients, New Hope Unlimited is focused on providing alternative retinoblastoma treatments for adults.

What are the Stages of Retinoblastoma?

Here at New Hope Unlimited in New Mexico, we are a leading provider of comprehensive and non-invasive therapies that address the many stages of retinoblastoma, including:

Intraocular Retinoblastoma

This cancer is the earliest stage of retinoblastoma, which can occur in one or both eyes. It has not yet metastasized (spread) to tissue beyond the eye.

Extraocular Retinoblastoma

This stage of eye cancer has metastasized or has reached other parts of the body.

Recurrent Retinoblastoma

“Recurrent” or “recurrence” means cancer has returned. In this stage, retinoblastoma has come back or metastasized in the eye, or to other areas of the body after remission.

Addressing the Signs of Retinoblastoma

Among our missions is to stop the progression of the following retinoblastoma symptoms:

  • A pupil that glows white when light is shone into it
  • The affected eye appearing larger than normal
  • Constantly dilated eye or eyes
  • Eyes that look in different directions
  • Redness in the white of the eyes
  • Cloudiness or discoloration in the center of the eyes
  • Pain in the affected eye
  • Swelling of the affected eye
  • Vision problems

What Caused Your Eye Cancer?

Currently, what causes retinoblastoma is unknown. However, the risk of developing the disease is much higher in people with a family history of retinoblastoma.

Several unclear factors may also play a role in eye cancer occurrence. Ongoing studies suggest that the following might be linked to an increased risk of retinoblastoma:

  • The father is 50 years of age or older during a child’s birth
  • Exposure of the father to radiation
  • A diet low in fruits and vegetables during pregnancy
  • Exposure to chemicals in diesel exhaust or gasoline during pregnancy

How Do Doctors Confirm a Cancer Diagnosis?

The key to improving your retinoblastoma prognosis and life expectancy is to receive an early and accurate diagnosis. These diagnostic tests will help your doctor find retinoblastoma and determine how big the tumor is:

  • Eye examination
  • Computerized tomography (CT) scan
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
  • Ultrasound

After receiving a retinoblastoma diagnosis, the most important step is to plan your treatment with New Hope Unlimited.
