Jaw Tumor Overview

Take control of your disease and treatment by knowing vital information about your diagnosis.

Jaw tumors - sometimes called odontogenic tumors — are rare growths or lesions that arise in the jawbone or soft tissues of the mouth and face. They vary in size and severity and are often benign (noncancerous). However, just like malignant (cancerous) tumors, benign lesions can be aggressive and invade the surrounding tissue and bone.

Jaw Tumors We Treat at New Hope Unlimited

Our tumor-combatting protocols may address the following types of jaw tumors:

Odontoma

Odontoma is the most common odontogenic tumor. In most cases, the condition has no symptoms, although it can interfere with tooth eruption or development.

Ameloblastoma

Ameloblastomas are common, slow-growing, and usually noncancerous tumors that develop most often near the molars. They can invade nearby structures, including the bone and soft tissue.

Central giant cell granuloma

Central giant cell granulomas are noncancerous lesions that often occur in the front of the lower jaw. These tumors can grow quickly, causing pain and destroying bones.

Odontogenic myxoma

Odontogenic myxomas are tumors that arise in the lower jaw. Though slow-growing, they can be large and aggressive enough to displace teeth.

New Hope Unlimited also offers treatment for other types of jaw tumors, including malignant squamous cell carcinomas and osteosarcomas, to name a few.

Reverse the Signs of Jaw Tumors

Our top priorities include addressing the symptoms of jaw tumors, which vary depending on its type. When you arrive at our facility for treatment, we will strive to reverse:

  • Lumps or thickening of the tissues
  • Red or white patches in the mouth
  • A chronic sore throat
  • Swelling in the back of the throat
  • Voice hoarseness
  • Pain along the jawbone or teeth
  • Difficulty chewing or swallowing
  • Teeth that have been pushed forward, backward, sideways, or rotated

What Caused Your Cancer?

According to the American Cancer Society, these factors appear to increase the risk of jaw tumors and oral cancers:

  • Smoking or using tobacco products
  • High consumption of alcoholic beverages
  • Infection with HPV or HIV
  • Excessive exposure to ultraviolet rays
  • Men who are over 50 years old
  • Having a family history of cancer

How Do Doctors Determine Whether a Tumor is Cancerous?

Since early diagnosis leads to improved jaw tumor prognosis and life expectancy, your doctor might order a series of tests, including:

  • A routine dental examination
  • Laboratory tests, such as:
    • Complete blood count (CBC)
    • HPV and HIV infection tests
  • Sample tissue removal (biopsies)
  • Imaging tests to learn the extent of tumor growth, including:
    • Computed tomography (CT) scans
    • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans
    • Positron emission tomography (PET) scans
    • Ultrasounds

After receiving a jaw tumor diagnosis, the most important step is to plan your treatment with New Hope Unlimited.
