What Patients Say About Cancer Treatment at New Hope

Alternative Cancer Treatment Testimonial from Cindy

What Is Proximal Type Epithelioid Sarcoma?

Winning the battle against a life-threatening disease begins with being armed with essential information.

Epithelioid sarcoma is a rare soft tissue cancer that primarily occurs in young adults, usually arising in distal extremities. A proximal variant of epithelioid sarcoma demonstrates a more aggressive clinical course. Large-cell or proximal-type epithelioid sarcoma affects middle-aged patients and develops in deep-seated locations, primarily the pelvis, genital tract, and the perineum (the area between the anus and the vulva or scrotum).

Proximal Type Epithelioid Sarcoma Symptoms

Like most soft tissue sarcomas, proximal-type epithelioid sarcoma may not cause any signs and symptoms in its early stages. As the tumor grows, however, it may cause two distinct symptoms:

  • A noticeable lump or swelling
  • Pain, which indicates a tumor is pressing on nerves or muscles

If you have persistent symptoms or notice any changes in your body and general health, seek immediate medical attention.

Proximal Type Epithelioid Sarcoma Risk Factors

Factors that may increase the risk of sarcoma include:

  • Radiation exposure. Previous radiation treatment for other cancer types can increase the risk of proximal-type epithelioid sarcoma.
  • Chemical exposure. Ingesting or being around certain chemicals for prolonged periods may increase the risk of sarcomas. These life-threatening chemicals are:
    • Herbicides
    • Dioxin
    • Arsenic
  • Inherited syndromes. Parents may pass on soft tissue sarcoma to their children through genetic syndromes that increase a person’s cancer risk. They include:

Risk factors do not always determine whether you will or will not develop epithelioid sarcoma. If you have risk factors, discuss prevention with your doctor.

Proximal Type Epithelioid Sarcoma Diagnosis

Early diagnosis is key to improving your proximal-type epithelioid sarcoma prognosis and life expectancy. Aside from a complete physical and medical examination, tests and procedures used in the diagnosis of epithelioid sarcoma include:

  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
  • Computed tomography (CT) scan
  • Positron emission tomography (PET) scan
  • Biopsy and lab test
