Why People Choose Alternative Cancer Treatment?

Basing on the National Health Interview Survey conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 4 in 10 adults use complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in the United States. On the other hand, about 1 in 9 children rely on certain forms of CAM. Non-vitamin and non-mineral natural products are the most typically used by adults. Other therapies like meditation, yoga, deep breathing exercises, massage therapy and meditation are beginning to grow in popularity as well. They use CAM for various health conditions. But why these people choose alternative cancer treatments aside from conventional cures? Reasons are too many and here are some of them:

Conventional treatment is not providing significant help.

For some reasons, a lot of patients are not seeing any substantial improvement in their conditions. They are beginning to lose hope but instead of allowing themselves to feel hopeless. they look for other ways that may possibly better their situation.

It makes them feel better physically and emotionally.

Substitute therapies make them feel a lot better in terms of their physical and emotional conditions. For one, therapeutic massage for cancer patients relieves pain and stress. In fact, a study published in the British Medical Journal found out that 25 brain tumor patients, who were distressed before they underwent massage twice a week for four weeks, were now below the edge of suffering from distress.

They feel more involved in the treatment program.

Some patients who are on conventional therapies believe that their doctors know best and that they can’t contribute; hence, they do not participate in their treatment plan. Some, though, are looking forward to the future outcome that they no longer think about their present situation. When they heard about alternative cancer treatment and how the process goes, they become interested because their participation is highly required. Primarily, they get to choose which cures to use.

Alternative practitioners are seen to have more time for their patients.

Some cancer patients think that their healthcare professionals are not only busy with their condition – but to others as well. This makes them feel they are just “one of the many others”; hence, their doctors’ time is divided among them. Whereas in alternative cancer centers, their practitioners make them feel they are “friends”. They spend more time in their therapy sessions, which are commonly 1-on-1. Patient-practitioner communication, they find, is a lot better.

They are tired dealing with side effects of their treatments.

Cancer patients deal with side effects greatly. Some of these are pain, nausea and vomiting, and fatigue. It is for these reasons some of them are giving up on their treatment programs. It is also these reasons that made them seek help from alternate therapies.

There are several other reasons patients opt for alternative cancer treatment. Anyway, it is their choice to do so. They have to ensure, however, that they are making informed decisions. For those who complement this with conventional therapies, however, they have to consult everything with their doctors to make sure that it will not negatively affect their treatment program.
