The study will be overseen by Dr. Edgar Payan Arechiga and will be facilitated at the Centro Medico Del Noroeste in Sonora, Mexico. Patients will participate in a six month program that includes (but is not limited to) multiple sessions of umbilical cord blood-derived stem cell treatment, as well as several inpatient therapies and specific procedures that will monitor the patient’s progress for at least two years.

“The protocol combines our diverse expertise in stem cell therapies with traditional modalities, and complementary treatments to ensure effective care of some of the most challenging patient diagnoses in HIV field,” Dr. Branyon said in an interview Saturday. “This is an intensive six month program that offers the patient an effective treatment plan with no negative side effects routinely experienced during normal pharmaceutical treatment.” Some of these patients have no hope of improvement with current therapies in use (although effective in many patients) and are desperately in need of alternate treatment plans tailored to their needs.

Transplanting pluripotent stem cells into subsets of HIV patients has the potential to reconstitute their immune system to effectively begin reversing the condition. Patients will be pre-screened for their suitability to the study using carefully selected criteria. “Leukapheresis may be combined with other FDA approved regimens, followed by stem cell therapy to rebuild the immune system”, Dr.Branyon said. The stem cell therapy design aims to (1) control secondary infections and (2) manage HIV-related lymphomas, in selective patient groups. The study protocol builds on the extensive experience of BIMG and recent successful HIV trials performed by other groups in Germany and Russia. The clear goals of the study will mean that the study outcomes will include definitively measurable outcomes that can be used for future larger clinical trials for FDA approval.

Branyon Integrative Medical Group offers its patients specialized treatment protocols which have, over the last ten years, been effectively used to treat chronic ad terminal immunodeficient diseases. Dr. Fredda Branyon, NMD, the Founder and Director of Branyon Integrative Medical Group, collaborates with international experts in order to continually improve existing protocols. New study results demonstrate high success rates using specialized white blood cells to prevent or treat lymphoma associated with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV-lymphoma) in patients who have received a hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT). This study was recently published online in Blood, the official journal of the American Society of Hematology.

The researchers hypothesized that aggressive EBV-lymphomas may be responsive to control or eradication with EBV-specific cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) treatment. (CTLs are highly specialized white blood cells that build the body's defenses against disease.) To test their theory, the team infused EBV-specific CTL lines into two groups of patients: those who were undergoing HSCT and were at high risk of developing EBV-lymphoma, and patients who had already developed lymphoma. The study reported that CTL treatment successfully prevented the development of EBV-lymphoma in all 101 patients in the at-risk group who received the therapy prophylactically and achieved sustained complete remission in 11 of the 13 patients (85 percent) treated therapeutically (those who already had the disease).Lymphoma is a cancer of white blood cells called lymphocytes that are largely responsible for maintaining the body's immunity, and EBV is one of the most common human viruses that can have a long-lasting impact on the body's immune system. Immune-compromised patients who receive HSCT, especially from mismatched donors or matched but unrelated donors, may be at higher risk of developing EBV-lymphoma than other patients. Previous studies have suggested that EBV-lymphoma occurs most often in the first few months post-transplant.

"Therapy with EBV-specific CTLs was effective for these severely immunocompromised patients. The CTLs successfully reached tumors, multiplied, and were able to kill the tumor cells," said lead study author Helen Heslop, MD, of the Center for Cell and Gene Therapy at Baylor College of Medicine, The Methodist Hospital, and Texas Children's Hospital.

While the successful outcomes result from a number of factors in the study, the researchers attribute some of the success of the trial to the time of treatment. The CTL lines were infused soon after stem cell transplantation, when the existing white blood cell count was still low and was not quickly regenerating, allowing the infused cells to more quickly multiply and mediate anti-viral and anti-tumor effects. In addition, by marking and tracking the CTL genes, the team was able to demonstrate that the cells could survive for up to nine years in the body, conferring long-term protection.

With strong clinical outcomes, the study team is working to determine the most appropriate role and timing for CTL infusions. Some newer therapies (such as monoclonal antibodies) offer prophylactic and therapeutic options but cannot offer long-term protection. Therefore, treatment with CTLs may be reserved for the highest risk patients -- those with a diagnosis of immune deficiency or a history of EBV-lymphoma, or those who develop elevated EBV levels after therapy with monoclonal antibodies.

Importantly, the study found that this type of therapy is not only effective, but economically advantageous. A preliminary analysis showed that a patient-specific CTL line can be manufactured, tested, and infused for approximately $6,000, a cost that compares well with other modalities used in the treatment of EBV-lymphoma. Moreover, the team determined that it is possible to manufacture cells in one location and ship them to another center for infusion, with reproducible and consistent results and clinical outcomes.

"It's important to note that this promising therapy is not only effective, but it is also a cost-effective option for high-risk patients," said Dr. Heslop.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________

This article was originally posted at http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/10/091031002506.htm.

Branyon Integrative Medical Group Announces New Financing Options for Patients

– Oct 27, 2009 – The Directors of Branyon Integrative Medical Group in Scottsdale, AZ, are excited to announce that they have officially secured financing options for patients that want to enroll in the Group’s treatment programs. Mark Branyon, the company’s Business Development Manager, stated earlier today, “This is a tremendous opportunity for us to reach out to more people that have been looking for integrative medical care but have been unable to afford it. This is a major milestone for our patients, because now they aren’t forced to rely on what their insurance provider will and will not cover.” Branyon Integrative Medical Group specializes in the integrative treatment of Cancer, as well as other diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and COPD, among others.

“I was diagnosed with emphysema in 1999. By 2007, I was on oxygen for most of the day and all hours of sleep,” says Cliff G., one of Branyon Integrative Medical Group’s patients. “The procedure was uncomplicated, and without side effects of any kind. Now, eight weeks later, I am out on the riding mower, mowing our acre of yard!” Cliff acknowledges both good and bad days in the fight against his emphysema, but states that his decision to be treated at Branyon Integrative Medical Group “was one of the wisest choices made during this disease process and I am expecting even greater gains as time goes by.”

Branyon Integrative Medical Group offers its patients a specialized treatment protocol known as Origination Medicine ©, which consists of an impressive combination of therapies that stem from both traditional and alternative medical ideologies. The Origination program is also combined with access to autologous therapy and umbilical cord blood stem cell therapy. Branyon Integrative Medical Group acknowledges that stem cell therapy is not an approved treatment option in the United States and is not FDA approved. All patients interested in stem cell therapy are referred to a partner facility in either Mexico or Panama.

Dr. Fredda Branyon, NMD, the Founder and Director of Branyon Integrative Medical Group, collaborates with international experts in order to continually improve existing protocols. Branyon Integrative Medical Group’s treatment strategy incorporates the best modalities of both worlds, mainstream and alternative, according to individual needs.

— More than 30 years ago the United States began embracing the theory, clinical practice and research of ancient Asian medical practices including non-contact therapeutic touch (NCTT). Now, according to a study at the University of Missouri, researchers discovered that 73 percent of patients receiving NCTT experienced a significant reduction in pain, had fewer requests for medication, and slept more comfortably following surgery.

An intentionally directed process of energy modulation to promote healing, NCTT allows practitioners to channel life energy through their hands to patients in a four-phase process. The four phases – centering, assessment, "unruffling" the field and intervention – allow a restoration of balance that enables ailing individuals to heal themselves. However, acceptance of the ideas that the human body is an energy-producing organism and that energy can be directed to benefit health is critical said Guy McCormack, lead researcher for the study and chair of the Department of Occupational Therapy and Occupational Science in the MU School of Health Professions.

In order to discover the effectiveness of NCTT, McCormack studied 90 patients receiving occupational therapy post-surgery and divided them into an experimental group where non-contact therapeutic touch therapy was given, a placebo group where a metronome acted as the treatment, and a control group where the participants did not receive any form of rehabilitation. When describing non-contact therapeutic touch, McCormack said the process involves physics and human energy fields.

"There seems to be some subliminal aspects we are not aware of that may have to do with the connectivity between people," McCormack said. "People don't question how you can text someone, transmit messages through computers, or visual images through televisions; thus the belief system is very powerful. If people believe that NCTT is going to be beneficial and are knowledgeable of it, it will be beneficial."

While the participants receiving non-contact therapeutic touch had considerable reductions in pain, patients in the placebo and control groups experienced an increase in pain perception due to the mechanical intervention of the metronome and chance.

"Although it is difficult to introduce this form of therapy into medical settings, more and more hospitals are using complementary therapies like NCTT because consumers are interested in abandoning pharmacological solutions for pain, and instead are interested in harnessing their own capacity to heal through an inexpensive and cost-effective process," McCormack said.

Adapted from materials provided by University of Missouri-Columbia, via EurekAlert!, a service of AAAS.

* Thanks to Sciencedaily.com for posting this wonderful article.

University of Missouri-Columbia. It is wonderful to see how modern science and medicine is returning to it more natural "roots" when searching for cures to today's most debilitating diseases.

(For the original article, CLICK HERE.)

________________________________________________________

Compounds extracted from green vegetables such as broccoli and cabbage could be a potent drug against melanoma, according to cancer researchers. Tests on mice suggest that these compounds, when combined with selenium, target tumors more safely and effectively than conventional therapy.

"There are currently no drugs to target the proteins that trigger melanoma," said Gavin Robertson, associate professor of pharmacology, pathology and dermatology, Penn State College of Medicine. "We have developed drugs from naturally occurring compounds that can inhibit the growth of tumors in mice by 50 to 60 percent with a very low dose."

Robertson and his colleagues previously showed the therapeutic potential of targeting the Akt3 protein in inhibiting the development of melanoma. The search for a drug to block the protein led them to a class of compounds called isothiocyanates.

These naturally occurring chemicals found in cruciferous vegetables are known to have certain cancer-fighting properties. However, the potency of these compounds is so low that a successful drug would require large impractical amounts of these compounds.

Instead, the Penn State researchers rewired the compounds by replacing their sulfur bonds with selenium. The result, they believe, is a more potent drug that can be delivered intravenously in low doses.

"Selenium deficiency is common in cancer patients, including those diagnosed with metastatic melanoma," explained Robertson, whose findings appear in the March edition of Clinical Cancer Research. "Besides, selenium is known to destabilize Akt proteins in prostate cancer cells."

To study the effectiveness of the new drug -- isoselenocyanate -- researchers injected mice with 10 million cancer cells. Six days later, when the animals developed large tumors, they were divided into two groups and treated separately with either the vegetable compounds or the compounds supplemented with selenium.

"We found that the selenium-enhanced compounds significantly reduced the production of Akt3 protein and shut down its signaling network," explained Robertson, who is also associate director of translational research and leader of the experimental therapeutics program at Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute. The modified compounds also reduced the growth of tumors by 60 percent, compared to the vegetable-based compounds alone.

When the researchers exposed three different human melanoma cell lines to the two compounds, the selenium-enhanced drug worked better on some cell lines than others. The efficiency was from 30 to 70 percent depending on the cell line.

The exact mechanism of how selenium inhibits cancer remains unclear. However Robertson, who has a filed provisional patent on the discovery, is convinced that the use of naturally occurring compounds that target cancer-causing proteins could lead to more effective ways of treating melanoma.

"We have harnessed something found in nature to target melanoma," said Robertson. "And since we only need tiny amounts to kill the cancer cells, it means even less toxic side-effects for the patient."

Human trials of the new drug are still some years away, but the Penn State researcher envisions a drug that could be delivered either intravenously to treat melanoma, or added to sunscreen lotion to prevent the disease.

----------------------------
Article adapted by Medical News Today from original press release.
----------------------------

Other researchers on the paper include Arati Sharma and Arun K.
Edwin McClure, a Virginia Commonwealth University advertising graduate student, says a stem-cell study he participated in appears to have cured his multiple sclerosis symptoms.

McClure started showing symptoms of MS in 2000 when he was a senior in high school.

Although he initially thought it was just a cold, he knew the condition was more serious when his vision began blurring.

"It was like someone turning down the dimmer switch," McClure said.

When his neurologist told him he was showing the symptoms of MS, he was surprised and confused."

It threw me for a loop," McClure said. "This is a disease that typically hits 40-year-old white women and I'm like, 'I'm an 18-year-old black male.' Somebody didn't get the memo."

McClure said being hooked up to an IV for the steroid treatments forced him to confront this sickness. He suffered from extreme fatigue, allergy attacks, heat intolerance and bad balance. McClure said his symptoms made it difficult to spend time with his loved ones.

"It's a huge burden of being a constant burden to those around you," McClure said.

McClure's mother, Bernice McClure, said she was devastated but would not lose hope.

"I was hoping to find whatever was out there that was going to help him long-term," the woman said.

In 2005, Dr. Katarina Bilikova told Bernice McClure about the clinical trial, led by Dr. Richard Burt at Northwestern University.

The trial used the patient's own stem cells to regenerate the immune system and reverse the symptoms of MS. The trial consisted of 21 patients. According to the lead author of the study, this is the first study to show an actual reversal of the disease.

McClure flew to Evanston, Ill., to participate. During the course of the trial, doctors took out McClure's own stem cells and used them to grow more cells. He then was given a course of chemotherapy to wipe out his immune system.

The treatment took nearly a month. McClure called this time "the lock down period." He was not allowed to go anywhere or have any visitors. He continued his undergraduate classes online.

"The hardest part was thinking about all my friends. I was just staying home watching 'A Different World' re-runs," McClure said.

Meanwhile, he was able to keep his disease hidden from his friends back at school. He said he didn't want to tell anyone, for fear of seeming weak. McClure's hair started falling out after four weeks.

He said the one thing he thought about was his high school football coach.

"He always said, 'If your minds are weak, your bodies are weak', " McClure said.

It was this mantra that helped McClure decide to shave off his hair.

After the month was complete, McClure returned to the hospital. His harvested stem cells then were transplanted back into his body.

When his cell count started increasing and McClure's symptoms started getting better, he and his mother knew the trial might have worked. Three years later, McClure said his symptoms have disappeared.

"This is the first study to actually show reversal of disability," Burt told Bloomberg.com on Jan. 30. "Some people had complete disappearance of all symptoms."

The treatment will go through one more trial before it can become an approved treatment for MS. McClure is finishing his second year as a graduate student in advertising at VCU and said if it wasn't for the treatment, he never would have been able to handle the pressures of grad school.

"It opened up the fence that MS had me locked into," Edwin said. Edwin and his mother attribute the success of the treatment to their faith.

"Without having God in our lives, I don't think any one of us would have made it through,"Bernice McClure said.

McClure said, "I would have quit after my second semester."

McClure plans to graduate from the VCU advertising graduate program in May.

This story was filed by UWIRE, which offers reporting from more than 800 colleges and universities worldwide. He said it all boils down to the fact people can be better off taking care of themselves naturally.

"I honestly believe teaching and educating people are the most important things I do here," he said.

He said while some of his customers are looking for ways to save money, many others are merely frustrated with western medicine's precepts.

"For some it is not so much the money savings as it is a loss of faith in doctors," he said. "They are fed up with the medical profession and are looking for answers.

"I am not against doctors and drug companies, but doctors treat the symptoms, not the problems," Piscitelli said. "People are getting fed up with the western reliance to just treat the symptoms."

Examples of this are when a gallbladder or other organ acts up and the physician's response is to remove the organ in question. Or instead of making a heart healthier, replacing it with a pacemaker or performing bypass surgery, he said.

Piscitelli said he has a loyal customer base, in large part he believes, because he takes the time to talk to them when they come into his store.

"My customers rely on the fact I will take the time to listen to them."

A Medina businesswoman also feels the counseling she provides to customers is one of the most important aspects of her success.

Taalibah has owned Wildflower Natural Foods at the corner of Routes 63 and 31A for 25 years.

"You have to listen to the customer's issues. You have to hear what ails them and sometimes what they think is the problem is not and you have to just listen to it all and figure it out."

She also sees herself as an advocate for the consumer in what she calls a "vibrant industry."

"I feel that I have to be the buffer between the customer and all the disinformation out there," she said. "I need to help them separate the hype from the truth."

Taalibah says one of her main concerns is the charlatans that can be found in any industry that put their own personal interests above that of the consumer.

"For example, I see all these infomercials on late-night TV, making all kinds of claims. I wonder how they can sleep at night."

Taalibah, who said she has a background in biology and chemistry, tries to stay well-informed by reading books, the latest trade industry magazines and articles by biochemists conducting cutting-edge research in the field.

"I won't have the products on my shelves unless they do what they say they will do," she said. "I have to believe in them. This (her business) doesn't work unless you are helping people."

Taalibah said examples of some of her most popular products are the Acai berry, a South American palm fruit from the Amazon Rainforest that is rich in powerful antioxidents; and Black Cherry Concentrate, which can be used to treat arthritis pain or different forms of inflammation.

Empowering people to make their own decisions is what Janice Meier is all about. She has owned The Health Junction, Ltd., at 35 Main St. in Akron, for 14 years.

"I do something called TBA -- total body analysis," she said. "I help people figure out what their body needs to stay healthy. I do what I can to help people, whether it be through natural foods, spices, herbs or homeopathic remedies."

Meier said a lot of her customers are struggling in the sagging economic climate.

"A lot of people who do not have health insurance come to me and I try and help them find ways to strengthen their immune system.

"They do not have any health insurance because they do not have a lot of money and cannot afford it, but they also can't afford to get sick either," she said.

Piscitelli, at The Olive Branch, said his customers are often very skeptical of pharmaceuticals and are looking for alternatives without a lot of serious side effects.

He said there are a vast number of natural supplements that can have a dramatic effect on one's health.

"If you do not digest things properly, that is what throws your numbers off," he said. "If the levels go up, the doctors look at the numbers and treat the symptoms. If your sugar goes up, the doctor says you are a diabetic. Now there are other factors, to be sure, but proper digestion is essential."

Piscitelli said that is why probiotics and enzymes are so important. Probiotics are the "good" bacteria that help improve digestion and can bolster the body's immune system.

"A lot of diseases of old age could be avoided with the proper use of probiotics and enzymes," he said. "They are without a doubt the most important items I sell."

Piscitelli said probiotics and enzymes detoxify the body thoroughly whether it be through parasite cleansing, liver cleansing or colon cleansing.

He said natural healing is much more readily-accepted nowadays, but he still gets the occasional question such as "Do you practice voodoo in there?"

Piscitelli said he actually works with doctors, which is unusual for someone in his line of work.

"I have four or five regular customers who are doctors. A doctor from Roswell Park Cancer Institute calls me from time to time for recommendations," he said.

Still, Piscitelli said some doctors are not so open-minded.

"There are oncologists who will tell their patients 'don't take anything else or you will disrupt the chemotherapy'

"Believe me, chemo is so toxic, there is nothing that I am going to give you in this entire store that could mess with chemo."

Piscitelli stressed however that he realizes many people need to have a physician they can rely on.

"I am not anti-pharamceuticals. We need doctors and drug companies, but we need to work together and become more proactive," he said. "Insurance companies need to open their eyes."

Meier said she tries to keep a low profile so as not to "step on any doctor's toes."

She actually teaches the art of dowsing to customers in order for them to make their own decisions about what their bodies need.

"I teach them different ways to test themselves," Meier said "If they grab something off the shelves, I can show them how to see if it is going to be beneficial to them."

Taalibah says doctors do refer customers to her occasionally, "something that never happened 25 years ago."

Another growing trend is celebrity endorsements, she said.

"When you see people like Dr. Mehmet Oz, Oprah Winfrey and Larry King giving nutritional supplements national exposure, it does help to create a lot more awareness," Taalibah said.

But ultimately the proof is in the results, Piscitelli said.

"I don't get sick," he said. "If I wake up in the morning and feel a sniffle coming on, I might take some olive leaf, oregano oil and elderberry and it will be gone by noon."

This coming from a man who said that other than for some surgical procedures, he has not been to a doctor in 28 years.

"I had a chainsaw accident once and I needed to get 66 stitches in my leg," he said. "I did not take any antibiotics. I used colloidal silver.

"That's the stuff they used back in the Civil War before antibiotics. I dripped it onto my wound and it never got infected, it healed up fine."

Buyer beware: Tips on use of herbal supplements

With rising herbal medicine sales paralleling a faltering economy, here are some tips on these dietary supplements:

— Know that herbal medicines aren't as strictly regulated as conventional medicines and that evidence on their safety and effectiveness is often lacking.

— Do your homework. Find out what scientific evidence exists about the product you're considering. A good resource is http://www.pubmed. gov, an online service from the National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health that contains summaries from published research.

— Tell your doctor or other health care provider any time you plan to use an alternative treatment; recognize that these products can sometimes interfere with other drugs and may even cause dangerous side effects.

— Find out if your insurance health plan covers alternative medicines; many don't.

— Check out the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine's Web site, http://www. nccam.nih.gov, which contains helpful information for evaluating these products.

Associated Press. Most patients I work with arrive with a complete lack of nutritional advice.

I believe many cancer patients would have a major improvement in their outcome if they controlled the supply of cancer's preferred fuel, glucose.

By slowing the cancer's growth, patients allow their immune systems and medical debulking therapies -- chemotherapy, radiation and surgery to reduce the bulk of the tumor mass -- to catch up to the disease.

Controlling one's blood-glucose levels through diet, supplements, exercise, meditation and prescription drugs when necessary can be one of the most crucial components to a cancer recovery program. The sound bite -- sugar feeds cancer -- is simple. The explanation is a little more complex.

The 1931 Nobel laureate in medicine, German Otto Warburg, Ph.D., first discovered that cancer cells have a fundamentally different energy metabolism compared to healthy cells.

The crux of his Nobel thesis was that malignant tumors frequently exhibit an increase in anaerobic glycolysis -- a process whereby glucose is used as a fuel by cancer cells with lactic acid as an anaerobic byproduct -- compared to normal tissues.

The large amount of lactic acid produced by this fermentation of glucose from cancer cells is then transported to the liver. This conversion of glucose to lactate generates a lower, more acidic pH in cancerous tissues as well as overall physical fatigue from lactic acid buildup. Thus, larger tumors tend to exhibit a more acidic pH.

This inefficient pathway for energy metabolism yields only 2 moles of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) energy per mole of glucose, compared to 38 moles of ATP in the complete aerobic oxidation of glucose.

By extracting only about 5 percent (2 vs. 38 moles of ATP) of the available energy in the food supply and the body's calorie stores, the cancer is "wasting" energy, and the patient becomes tired and undernourished. This vicious cycle increases body wasting.

It is one reason why 40 percent of cancer patients die from malnutrition, or cachexia. Hence, cancer therapies should encompass regulating blood-glucose levels via diet, supplements, non-oral solutions for cachectic patients who lose their appetite, medication, exercise, gradual weight loss and stress reduction. Professional guidance and patient self-discipline are crucial at this point in the cancer process. The quest is not to eliminate sugars or carbohydrates from the diet but rather to control blood glucose within a narrow range to help starve the cancer and bolster immune function.

Ginger, Pepper Treat Difficult Cancers

This article written by Maggie Fox, and can be found at www.reuters.com.

Some complementary therapies may help relieve certain symptoms of cancer or its treatment. An alternative therapy refers to an unproven therapy that is used instead of conventional medicine. Some alternative therapies are bogus, and some have dangerous or even life-threatening side effects. Still others scientists don't know enough about.

To date, information on just how many patients actually use complementary and alternative methods and on which patient characteristics influence that use has been limited.
  Popular Therapies

ACS researchers surveyed more than more than 4,000 survivors who were participants in the American Cancer Society's Study of Cancer Survivors-I (SCS-I) and found that more than half used some type of alternative or complementary therapy.

"Many complementary methods are extremely popular among cancer survivors, who are spending a lot of their time, money, and attention on them," said Ted Gansler, MD, Director of Medical Content at the American Cancer Society and co-author of the study. "For this reason, it's important to determine which are helpful, not only for shrinking tumors and extending survival, but also for relieving symptoms and improving quality-of-life."

The researchers looked at 19 different complementary methods -- from acupuncture to Tai Chi. Survivors listed the following practices most frequently: prayer/spiritual practice (61.4%), relaxation (44.3%), faith/spiritual healing (42.4%), nutritional supplements/vitamins (40.1%), meditation (15%), religious counseling (11.3%), massage (11.2%), and support groups (9.7%). Hypnosis (0.4%), biofeedback (1.0%), and acupuncture/acupressure (1.2%) were among the least cited.

A Detailed Picture

Of the group, younger, more affluent, and more educated cancer survivors were more likely to use the therapies. Women were more likely than men to use energy techniques such as Tai Chi and yoga (10.1 vs. 1.9%) and manipulative body practices such as massage (16.9 vs. 3.9%), though both men and women were only somewhat less likely to use non-spiritual mind-body methods such as aromatherapy, hypnosis, and meditation (58.6% vs. 42.8%).

Breast and ovarian cancer survivors were more likely to use alternative and complementary therapies than survivors of other cancer types, even when the researchers controlled for factors such as gender, stage of disease, and other characteristics. More research is needed into why these groups are more likely to embrace the methods.

This is the first of several reports that will tap American Cancer Society's Study of Cancer Survivors-I (SCS-I) data to further investigate the topic of complementary and alternative medicine use among cancer survivors.

"We need to learn more about why some people use certain complementary methods, why other don't, what benefits users expect, and how effective various complementary methods are in improving survivors' length and quality of life," said Gansler.

For more information on this topic and to learn more about some of the therapies mentioned in this story, see the American Cancer Society's guide to Complementary and Alternative Therapies.

Citation: "A Population-based Study of Prevalence of Complementary Methods Use by Cancer Survivors: A Report From the American Cancer Society's Studies of Cancer Survivors." Published online August 4, 2008 in Cancer. A physician is highly trained in their medical field; however, their education and skill for the treatment of cancer may overshadow the compassion that also underlies many medical ailments. A cancer physician must be aware of other treatments that are also available to the patient, and understand the various treatments that the patient will be comfortable working with. Each patient is a fine, infinite being that must be handled just as such. Allowing the physician to know where the patient stands on their medical treatment, and what they are willing to do to be proactive towards their own recovery is essential for anyone that is going through a medical treatment.
Approaching a medical physician with information that is deemed important by the patient is essential to assisting the physician in understanding the medical benefits that one wishes to receive. With medical treatments and research, there are continuous pieces of information that continue to flow into literature. There are constant medical breakthroughs that are continuously arising on the medical front. This is an important part of medical research, and both the medical professional as well as the patient should be vigilant in reading such material. When the patient goes to their next doctor’s visit, they should take the information that they have regarding new medical information with them so their physicians can also review the material.

When dealing with a physician, it is important to remember that the patient’s life and the ability to become rehabilitated is what is at stake. There are many medical professionals that are proficient in their designated field of practice, but are also interested in working only with what they were taught in medical school. By taking any information that is readily available to the physician, the physician can review the materials and see if it is an innovative program that will also be of benefit to the patient.

Joining a support group is also a very important journey of any medical treatment. It is through a support group that one can effective receive the love and understanding that is needed while going through an alternative Cancer treatment. A support group can also offer the encouragement that a patient needs in order to remain proactive towards a cure for their cancer ailment, additional research to be conducted, or for there mere moral support. There is sufficient evidence to support that there are many patients that have come along much further in their medical treatments when they have received adequate support from those that they know and others in the community.

Stimulating the body to accept a new means of medicine, or knowing when the body is unable to receive evasive medical procedures is important to those that are looking for an alternate means of cancer treatment. Working with a physician that is open-minded is also a wonderful way to ascertain that there will be medical treatments that are readily available for when the patient is ready.

The staff at New Hope Medical Center strives to aid their patients through alternative resources, and encourage their patients to strive for the best in their own personal care. There is certainly no one way that a health ailment such as Cancer can be treated with one method of medical assistance. Giving faith and courage, as well as the perseverance to remain strong, both mentally and physically, will offer the best results when receiving medical treatments.

Great News for Patients Seeking Stem Cell Therapies!

Since New Hope Medical Center's opening almost nine years ago, we have consistently striven to offer our patients various treatment options that have proven themselves effective. These treatments have come from almost every field of medicine, including Naturopathy, Homeopathy, Traditional Medicine, Chinese Herbal Medicine, and Mind-Body Therapies. We've also been fortunate enough to have access to the studies of some of the greatest medical pioneers and researchers of our time. Through the years we have developed great relationships with many other physicians and facilities around the world, and today I am excited to announce an amazing new alternative for our patients: Umbilical Cord Blood Stem Cell Therapy.

New Hope Medical Center has formed an affiliation with MSC, a Panamanian Company, which offers umbilical cord blood stem cell therapies to a worldwide network of patients. MSC is dedicated to providing only the highest quality stem cells at a reasonable cost. The company was designed to give patients something that they couldn't find anywhere else: a warm and caring atmosphere and a staff that truly believes in putting the needs of the patient first.

MSC's primary purpose is two-fold. The first part of the goal is to help as many people as possible. Umbilical Cord Blood Stem Cell Therapy shows great promise for the treatment of many of today's worst medical disorders and conditions. They have already seen excellent results in the treatment of Cancer and Emphysema. The second part of the goal is to collect enough information to prove to the world's leaders that Umbilical Cord Blood Stem Cell Therapy is a very safe, very effective treatment that can (and should) be offered to the public in local hospitals at an affordable price.

If you would like to read more about the great work that MSC is involved in, feel free to go to www.biostemcellgenetics.com. I look forward to working with this great group of people that truly believes in pulling together to create a better, healthier world for us all.

        Yours in Health,

Dr. Fredda Branyon
Founder/Director, New Hope Medical Center

MSC is a third-party company based in Panama. No umbilical cord blood stem cell therapies are performed within the United States, as the FDA has not approved this treatment for legal use.

Cancer Facts

According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 1,399,780 new cases of cancer were diagnosed in the year 2006. An estimated 556,902 Americans died from cancer. That is more than 1,500 people a day. With our alternative cancer treatments we hope to aid in the lowering of cancer related deaths in the U.S.
Facts about Cancer:

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the US, exceeded only by heart disease. In the US, 1 of every 4 deaths is from cancer.

Cancer obtains its protein needs from healthy cells

Cancer needs simple sugars to survive and multiply. Dietary measures low in simple sugars can help starve cancer cells.

Cancer cells are susceptible to heat. Administering heat to cancer cells may help shrink cancerous tumors.

Cancer cells need a large blood supply and they proliferate rapidly. It is important to reduce blood supply to the tumor, induce anti-angiogensis and decrease proliferation.

Toxins from cancer cells build up in the body, especially when the cancer cells die at a high rate from chemotherapy and radiation. It is crucial to increase detoxification in the body to restore normal regulatory functions (among others) and to restore normal programmed cell death (apoptosis).

The DNA in cancer cells is undifferentiated (it has lost the ability to become a certain cell, like a liver cell, and grows out of control without the programmed cell death of normal cells). Certain natural herbal substances can protect the DNA of healthy cells from mutations. They can also assist in the re-differentiation of cell DNA. This means reverting cancer cells to normal cells, whenever possible through re-establishment of cell cycle controls hereby slowing their growth.

Cancer lowers the immune system. Improving the immune system and raising the activity of cancer-fighting mechanisms helps the body to fight cancer.

Strengthening normal cells through alternative cancer treatments and appropriate nutrition and oxygenation improves their resistance to cancer spread.

New Hope Medical Center makes no claims implicit or explicit about curing cancer. Our goal is to mobilize and enhance the body's natural ability to defend and repair itself by supporting cellular and immune functions.
Click each link to get more details on each diagnosis.

    Amyoptrophic Lateral Sclerosis

Bladder Cancer

Breast Cancer

Cervical Cancer

Colon Cancer

Liver Cancer

Lung Cancer

Lymphomas

Pancreatic Cancer

Prostate Cancer

Stomach Cancer
